Newman used a three-run second inning to take the lead, then tacked on two late insurance runs in a 6-2 win over the Rock Falls to win the Class 2A Newman Regional title Saturday, its fourth straight regional title and fifth in the last six seasons – and its first in Class 2A.
Aidan Wyzard and Dylan Hodges each won four events, while Eli Crome qualified in three to help lead Sycamore to a sectional title. Dale Johnson qualified in two distance events for Sterling, and 11 1,600 runners qualified.
Area teams including Marmion Academy, Rock Falls, Sandwich, Sterling, Dixon, Mendota, Plano, Sycamore, Wheaton Academy and St. Francis were at Sycamore High School Thursday to compete in the IHSA Class 2A boys track sectional.
Princeton kept up the pressure all game long, and eventually it paid off Wednesday in its 2A Rock Falls Regional semifinal. The Tigresses had baserunners in all but one inning, and they finally broke through with runs in each of the final three innings to top Rock Falls 3-2.

Sterling won the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional despite not having an individual champ, Mendota and Genoa-Kingston both had individual freshman champions, Sycamore had a surprise pole vault champ and Sandwich's Sunny Weber kept up her domination.

There weren’t too many zeroes put up on the scoreboard Monday when Rock Falls hosted Oregon in a Big Northern Conference softball clash.The teams combined for 32 runs, 31 hits and 26 RBIs as the Hawks avenged a loss earlier this season with a 21-11 win in six innings.

The Sterling track and field teams put on a show at the 72nd Annual Sterling Night Relays on DuWayne Dietz Track at Roscoe Eades Stadium on Thursday. The Golden Warrior girls won the team title, while the boys finished second in eight-team fields.

The Rockets won their fifth straight Ferris championship, topping Kewanee by 41 points, 283.5-242.5, with the host Tigers third at 162.5, Mendota fourth (150) and Hall fifth (102.5).

Rock Falls senior utility Nicolette Udell is glad to be playing softball again. After hitting a home run in back-to-back games, she has been voted the Sauk Valley Media Athlete of the Week for March 25-31.
