“We’re an amazing country with our freedoms,” DeKalb resident Dawn Harper said during the city's Memorial Day parade. “We take it for granted way too much." Events abounded in DeKalb County Monday to pay tributes to fallen service people.

Michael Creasey, a teacher at Richland School in Crest Hill, has played taps at Crest Hill's annual Memorial Day ceremony for more than 20 years.

Polo residents recognized Memorial Day on May 29, 2023, with a parade that started on East Mason Street and ended at Fairmount Cemetery, located just north of the city. A ceremony hosted by members of Patrick Fegan American Legion Post No. 83 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8455 took place at the cemetery.

The memorial included music by the award-winning Joliet American Legion Band, speeches from re-enactors Max Daniels and Mary Daniels portraying Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln and the raising of the American flag.

The New Bedford Royal Neighbors Camp 1491 will host a Memorial Day Service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 4 at the Greenville Fairfield Union Cemetery in Tampico.
