Here we are again at the end of another successful high school sports year in the Sauk Valley – and 2022-23 was a doozy.
Huntley freshman Janiah Slaughter became the first from her school to win a medal at the IHSA Girls Wrestling State Tournament on Feb. 25 in Bloomington. Slaughter was voted the Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week by readers.
Batavia junior Sydney Perry, the Team USA No. 2 ranked 145-pounder and defending IHSA 145-pound state champion, defeated Team USA No. 138-pounder Valerie Hamilton 7-4 in the title match days after both were initially ineligible before being reinstated two days before.
Batavia junior Sydney Perry won her eligibility appeal to the IHSA on Thursday and will compete at this weekend’ state tournament in Bloomington. Perry was initially deemed ineligible after competing for Team USA in Sweden last weekend.
A total of 25 girls from the Joliet area will compete in this weekend's state tournament.
