Dixon doubles team Lucas Healy & Owen Grot won their first-round doubles match at the IHSA Boys Tennis State Tournament on Thursday, but the other three local entries – doubles teams from Dixon and Sterling and a Golden Warriors' singles player – all dropped their openers.
For four of the seven Dixon and Sterling boys tennis state tournament qualifiers this season, it will be the second time making the trip to the Chicago suburbs. For the other three qualifiers, it will be their first state experience.
The Dixon tennis doubles team of Lucas Healy and Owen Grot claimed the championship at the Class 1A Rochelle Regional on Saturday, and did it by defeating fellow Dukes Leith Elbzour and Logan Moeller.The Dukes won the team title with 22 points, ahead of Sterling and Geneseo (20).
The Rock Falls and Newman softball teams both won regional semifinal games Tuesday, and will play for championships on Friday. Erie-Prophetstown, Polo, Eastland, Fulton and Forreston also advanced to regional championship games with wins.
The Milledgeville baseball team eked out a 7-6 regional quarterfinal win over Morrison with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Monday, while AFC baseball rolled to a six-inning regional quarterfinal win over Polo.
