Local roundup: Newman beats St. Bede in three sets at home

The Newman volleyball team remained undefeated in Three Rivers Conference play with a 25-11, 24-26, 25-11 win over St. Bede on Tuesday evening in Sterling.

Kennedy Rowzee led the Comets (9-2, 3-0 TRAC East) with 12 kills and four blocks, while Ally Clevenger added 10 kills and 14 digs, and Jessalin Johnson finished with 10 kills, 11 digs and three aces. Paige Grennan had 23 digs, two aces and two assists, Katie Grennan dished 17 assists and served four aces, and Shae McNeill also had 17 assists.

Eastland def. Fulton 25-14, 25-12: The Cougars downed the Steamers on the road in NUIC play.

Addison Burkholder had eight kills and eight digs, Katlyn Spong added five kills and two blocks, and Annika Myre finished with three aces and eight digs for Eastland (6-2, 1-0). Chloe Sweitzer also had eight digs, Quinc Haverland served a pair of aces, and Jenica Stoner dished 15 assists.

Brooklyn Brennan’s three kills, three aces and three digs led Fulton, with Gracie Sanderson and Ava Bowen also adding three digs each. Kara Stoecker stuffed a pair of blocks, and Jersey Boysen dished three assists.

Milledgeville def. AFC 25-17, 25-17: The Missiles improved to 5-0 with an NUIC victory in Ashton.

Ali Mertz had eight kills, five digs, three aces and three assists, while Lydia Faulkner added five kills and two aces for Milledgeville. Emma Foster finished with nine assists, seven digs, three aces and two kills, Lily Smith spiked three kills, Carissa Hubbard chipped in seven digs, and Rylee Matthews added four digs.

For the Raiders, Brianna Gonnerman had four digs, four assists and three aces, Taylor Jahn had four blocks, three digs and an ace, and Sara Ramadani added eight digs and an ace. Kate Bass added seven digs, and Bailey Berogan had six digs and two blocks.

Polo def. Orangeville 25-23, 25-18: The Marcos won an NUIC match on the road in straight sets.

Nicole Boelens had eight kills and seven digs for Polo, while Bekah Zeigler added six kills, four digs and two aces. Maddi Jones and Natalie Nelson each had three kills, with Nelson adding eight assists and six digs. Kadence Sheaffer finished with 12 assists, six digs, two kills and two aces.

Forreston def. Amboy 25-12, 25-16: The Cardinals beat the visiting Clippers in their NUIC matchup.

Jaiden Schneiderman had eight kills, and Brooke Boettner had nine assists and four kills for Forreston.

Monmouth-Roseville def. Erie-Prophetstown 25-14, 25-23: The Panthers lost a Three Rivers West match despite pushing Monmouth-Roseville in the second set.

Kennedy Buck had five kills, five assists, eight digs and three aces for E-P. Hailey Bush had two kills and two blocks, and Madyson Bushaw and Jaiden Oleson also had two blocks each. Oleson also dished five assists, and Emma Davis added seven digs.

Girls golf

Rock Falls wins quadrangular at home: The Rockets defeated three other teams in a nonconference meet at Rock River Golf and Pool, shooting a 175 to beat Kaneland (186), Sandwich (226) and Hinckley-Big Rock (231).

Megan Fiorini was medalist with a 2-over-par 38 for Rock Falls. Ellie Wasson fired a 43, Taylor Brown and Peyton Burns both shot 47s, Lauren Tupper had a 48, and Brooke Danreiter added a 65.

Oregon 196, Byron 214: The Hawks handled the Tigers in a Big Northern dual at PrairieView, led by co-medalist Ava Hackman, who fired a 43.

Cassie Nyderek and Mia Trampel both fired 48s for Oregon (9-0, 7-0 BNC), and Lena Trampel added a 57.

Dixon visits Rockford Lutheran: Katie Drew was medalist with a 34 as the Duchesses played at Ingersoll. Tya Collins shot a 68.

Marcos visit Fulton: Polo shot a 236 at Fulton Country Club, as the Steamers had only one golfer.

Kamryn Stockton led the Marcos with a 48, while Braelyn Velez (60), Avery Faivre (63) and Kealie Wilcox (65) also counted toward the team score.

Aliya Bueno shot a 65 for Fulton.

Reiland shoots 55 for Thunder: West Carroll’s Victoria Reiland shot a 55 to lead the Thunder at Sandburr Run. Raven Siegmeier shot a 61, and Katie Smith carded a 62.

Boys golf

Newman 167, St. Bede 187, Bureau Valley 193: The Comets won a Three Rivers triangular at home, led by medalist Kyle Wolfe’s 38.

Ty Brockman had a 41, and Carson Palmer and Jacob Donald both fired 44s for Newman.

Bryson Smith led BV with a 44, Seth Spratt fired a 47, Cooper Balensiefen had a 50, and Parker Stier added a 52.

Sycamore 173, Sterling 182, Sandwich 194: The Golden Warriors split a nonconference triangular in Sycamore.

Cam O’Brien led Sterling with a 41, and Dale Guerrieri fired a 43. Carter Morris and Cale Cushman both shot 49s, and Braden Hartman and Mason Hubbard both added 51s.

Rockford Lutheran 164, Dixon 169: The Dukes came up just short in a Big Northern dual at Ingersoll, as Lutheran was led by medalist Jake Gusy’s 37.

Alex Harrison led Dixon with a 38, while Steven Kitzman fired a 40, Mason Weigle shot a 45, and Ben Oros had a 46. Grant Jacobs (47) and Sage Magnafici (50) also played.

Byron 165, Oregon 205: The Hawks dropped a Big Northern dual to the Tigers at PrairieView.

Isaac Kaltenbrun led Oregon with a 45, Jared Glendenning fired a 52, and Ryan Fox and Logan Sarver both had 54s.

Byron’s Maison Brandt was medalist with an even-par 36.

Fulton 168, Polo 277: Led by medalist Ian Wiebenga and runner-up Landon Meyers, the Steamers won an NUIC dual at Fulton Country Club.

Wiebenga shot a 2-over-par 38, and Meyers was one stroke behind him at 39. Aiden Day (44) and Kyle Meinema (47) also contributed to Fulton’s team score.

Polo got a 49 from Cody Buskohl, and 59 from Clay Davis, a 76 from Connor Ukena, and a 93 from Caleb Sutton.

Sherrard 167, Monmouth-Roseville 178, Erie-Prophetstown 202: The Panthers dropped a Three Rivers West triangular at Gibson Woods in Monmouth.

Parker Rangel fired a 49, and Ethan Palmer and Bryce VanDeWostine both had 50s for E-P. Blake Geuns’ 53 rounded out the team score.

Sherrard’s Blake Wynn and Austin Fratzke shared medalist honors with matching 41s.

Aquin 181, Forreston 242: The Cardinals couldn’t keep up with the Bulldogs in an NUIC dual at Sunset Golf Club in Mt. Morris, as Aquin’s Lane Pierson was medalist with a 38.

Colton McGlynn led Forreston with a 56, and Hayden Stralow fired a 59.

Thunder face RRSM: Erik Kice shot a 73 as West Carroll faced River Ridge-Scales Mound at Sandburr Run. Teammate Durlin Richardson shot a 79.

Boys soccer

Sterling 2, Galesburg 0: The Golden Warriors defeated the Silver Streaks in a Western Big 6 game at home.

Luis Ibarra Rodriguez and Fabricio Peña scored within minutes of each other for Sterling (4-2-2, 1-1).

Winnebago 3, Oregon 0: The Hawks (3-7, 0-3) fell on the road to Big Northern foe Winnebago, as goalkeeper Miley Smith made 12 saves.

Girls tennis

Sterling 7, Galesburg 2: The Golden Warriors won five singles matches and two doubles matches en route to a win at home in their Western Big 6 opener.

In singles play, Ellie Aitken won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1, Anna Meltzer won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Ireen Hilty won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Layla Tablante won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Tori Arduini won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.

Aitken and Jenica Francis won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Hilty and Madison Hubbs won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles for Sterling (3-1, 1-0).

Rockford Lutheran 3, Dixon 2: The Duchesses dropped a Big Northern Conference dual in Rockford, winning a pair of doubles matches.

Addison Arjes and Rylee Pfoutz won 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 at No. 2 doubles, and Leah Stees and Siena Kemmeran won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

Leah Kuehl and Grace Ferguson lost a hard-fought match at No. 1 doubles, falling 7-5, 7-6.

Mendota 4, Newman 1: The Comets’ lone win came from Sarah Tunink at No. 1 singles in a Three Rivers loss at home.

Tunink defeated Alex Stremlau 6-2, 7-6 (7). At No. 1 doubles, Julia Rhodes and Lilliana Campbell dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 decision.

Girls swimming

Moline 126, Sterling 58: The Water Warriors won two events in a Western Big 6 dual loss to Moline at the Duis Center.

Madison Austin won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.28, and Payton Purdy won the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.98 for Sterling.

Rebecca Riley was runner-up in the 200 freestyle (2:19.73) and the 100 free (1:03.00), and the Warriors also took second in the 200 medley relay (2:09.59) with the team of Kate Austin, Paige Geil, Sammie Knox and Madison Austin, and the 400 freestyle relay (4:25.91) with the team of Riley, Geil, Emily Lofgren and Purdy.
