SportShorts: Locals named to halls of fame in various sports

Several local former athletes and current coaches were elected to the hall of fame in their various sports recently.

Rock Falls baseball coach Donnie Chappell was selected as part of the Class of 2022 to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, while Newman assistant coach Tim Nelson was honored as part of the Class of 2022 for the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

Four former area basketball players were elected to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame: the Rock Falls trio of Jorge Acosta, Bryan Boerjan and Brian Vance, along with Forreston’s Jonathan Schneiderman.

Area football players named all-state

The Champaign News-Gazette released its 86th All-State Football Team on Christmas Day, and a few area players were honored.

Byron senior running back Chandler Binkley and Lena-Winslow senior defensive back Marey Roby were both named to the first team, while Forreston senior running back Matthew Beltran, Polo junior running back Avery Grenoble, and Byron senior defensive back Ethan Palzkill were selected to the Special Mention 100 list.

Locals litter all-state volleyball team

The Champaign News-Gazette released its 40th All-State Volleyball Team on Christmas Day, and several local players were honored.

Sterling junior outside hitter Grace Egan and Forreston senior libero Kara Erdmann were both named to the second team, while Polo senior outside Nicole Boelens, Eastland senior outside Addison Burkholder, and Eastland senior libero Chloe Sweitzer were Special Mention 50 selections.

Newman senior outside Ally Clevenger, Rock Falls senior middle Mallory Pinske, and Rock Falls senior outside Maya Sands were named to the Honorable Mention 100.

Seniors hit the lanes in December

The Sauk Valley Senior Bowlers played throughout December at Plum Hollow Lanes in Dixon, meeting every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m.
