Local Roundup: Oregon’s Hackman, Sterling’s Pink advance out of girls golf regionals

Oregon golfer Ava Hackman is through to the sectional following her 87 to place seventh at the Class 1A Galena Regional on Thursday.

Boylan’s Ella Greenburg shot a 75 to claim medalist honors.

Hackman’s round included a birdie on the 335-yard par-5 No. 4, and she played the front nine in a four-over-par 39.

As a team, Oregon was fourth with a 381, missing the last team qualifying spot by three strokes. Boylan was the regional champion with a 336.

Oregon got a 93 from Cassandra Nyderek, who fell in a playoff for the 10th spot to Rockford Lutheran’s Kristin Rundle. Lena Trampel shot a 95.

West Carroll shot a 469 to place 11th. The Thunder got a 106 from Victoria Reiland, a 108 from Kylie Hill, a 127 from Raven Siegmeier and a 128 from Katie Smith.

Bella Lego led the Eastland contingent with a 99. Forreston got a 102 from Hannah Harvey.

Sterling 8th at Harlem: The Sterling Golden Warriors shot a 464 to place eighth at the Class 2A Harlem Regional.

Maddie Pink shot an 88 to place fifth overall and qualify for Monday’s sectional at Belvidere.

Pink had four pars on each side, playing the front nine in 43 and the back in 45.

Guilford was the team champion with a 354, followed by a 363 from Belvidere and a 374 from Huntley.

Guilford’s Kayla Sayyalinh shot a 74 to claim the individual title.

Sterling had a 99 from Jozlyn Johnson, a 134 from Libbi Kendrick, and a 143 from Makaya Wolfe.

Boys golf

Oregon’s season ends at Algonquin: The Oregon Hawks were unable to get any golfers out of the Class 1A Elgin Academy Regional.

Isaac Kaltenbrun had the top score for the Hawks with a 102. Logan Sarver and Brady Davis each shot a 103. Jared Glendenning shot a 112, Kyler Early a 113, and Brogan Wilkinson a 114.

As a team, the Hawks were in 12th with a 420. Byron was the team champion with a 323, beating Elgin Academy by two strokes. Westminster Christian’s Jackson Hulsey was the individual champion, shooting a 72.

Volleyball

Newman def. Bureau Valley 25-15, 25-16: The Comets remained undefeated in Three Rivers East play with a win over the Storm in Sterling

Kennedy Rowzee slammed 11 kills, and Ally Clevenger added nine kills, nine digs, a block and an ace for Newman (16-2, 9-0). Jessalin Johns had eight kills and eight digs, Katie Grennan finished with 13 assists, two kills, two aces and two digs, Shae McNeill added 14 assists and six digs, and Paige Grennan chipped in eight digs.

Moline def. Sterling 25-18, 25-23: The Golden Warriors fell to the Maroons on the road in a Western Big 6 match.

Grace Egan had 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks for Sterling (8-14, 6-4), and Kathryn Rowzee added three kills, two blocks and an ace. Karmen Weinrich had eight digs, and Delali Amankwa finished with 14 assists and seven digs.

Rockford Lutheran def. Rock Falls 10-25, 25-17, 25-14: After cruising through the opening set on the road, the Rockets struggled in the next two and suffered their first Big Northern loss.

Mallory Pinske spiked seven kills, and Maya Sands had five kills and 14 digs for Rock Falls (19-1, 3-1). Cadence Stonitsch finished with 11 assists and 10 digs, Cara Goff added 18 digs, and Denali Stonitsch chipped in seven assists and seven digs.

Genoa-Kingston def. Dixon 25-16, 25-15: The Duchesses dropped a Big Northern match at Lancaster Gym.

Elena Castillo-Wetzell had 11 digs and an ace, while Olivia Cox and Mallory Coley each had two kills and three blocks for Dixon; Coley added four digs. Sam Tourtillott chipped in two kills and eight digs.

Oregon def. Stillman Valley 25-18, 25-18: The Hawks handled the Cardinals in a Big Northern match on the road.

Jenae Bothe had 12 kills, five digs and an ace, while Ava Wight added three kills, 13 digs and three aces. Kenna Wubbena chipped in four kills and four digs for Oregon.

Milledgeville def. AFC 25-13, 25-12: The Missiles used a balanced attack to win an NUIC match at home.

Lydia Faulkner had three kills for Milledgeville (15-7-1, 4-2), while Adriana Miller, Lilianna Smith, Alyssa Mertz and Emma Foster each had two kills. Miller added six digs and an ace, Foster served three aces, and Mertz dished six assists. Carissa Hubbard and Ryle Matthews each chipped in eight digs and an ace.

Polo def. Warren 25-20, 25-13: The Marcos rolled to an NUIC win at home, led by five kills and 12 digs from Nicole Boelens.

Emileigh Williams spiked three kills for Polo, while Teah Almasy added two kills, three assists and an ace. Natalie Nelson finished with five assists, two aces and four digs, and Lindee Poper had eight digs, a klill, a block and an ace.

Boys soccer

Sterling 4, Stillman Valley 1: John Cid scored two goals to lead the Golden Warriors to a nonconference win on the road.

Julian Uresti and Fabricio Peña also scored goals for Sterling (8-4-3), and Peña, Cid and Adrian Gallardo dished assists.

DeKalb 6, Dixon 0: The Dukes suffered a shutout on the road in a nonconference game. Landon Weishaar scored four goals for the Barbs.

Oregon 3, DePue-Hall 3: The Hawks forged a tie at Oregon Park West, with a pair of goals from Joey Gelander.

Jacob Vegliando added a goal and an assist for Oregon (7-11-2), and Liam Dickson-Harriett also dished an assist.

College volleyball

Sauk Valley def. Carl Sandburg 25-20, 25-19, 25-12: The Skyhawks improved to 23-1 with a straight-sets win at home.

Michal Willman had 16 kills, 15 digs and four aces for Sauk (5-0 Arrowhead), and Kiley Sanders added 11 kills and 16 digs. Tiana Tichler spiked nine kills, Juliana Rotella slammed three kills, Jaelyn Fitzgerald had two kills and three blocks, and Kierra Collins added two kills and two blocks. Audra Goff finished with 21 assists and nine digs, and Gabby Jones dished 18 assists.
