The Newman volleyball team rolled in the first set, then hung on in the second to defeat Riverdale 25-9, 27-25 on Monday night in a Three Rivers crossover contest.

Ally Clevenger had 10 kills and eight digs for the Comets, and Kennedy Rowzee finished with nine kills and two blocks. Paige Grennan had 11 digs, Katie Grennan had eight assists and three aces, and Jordan Morthland added nine digs and three aces. Shae McNeill dished 12 assists.

Rockford Lutheran def. Dixon 25-10, 25-17: The Duchesses dropped a Big Northern Conference road match in straight sets.

Sam Tourtillott had three kills for the Duchesses (3-8, 3-5 BNC), and Addyson Kinn set five assists. Elena Castillo-Wetzell added 12 digs.

Eastland def. Lena-Winslow 25-15, 25-16: The Cougars claimed an NUIC victory in Lena.

Addison Burkholder led the way with 10 kills, and Karlie Krogman added seven kills, three aces and a block for Eastland (11-2, 5-0). Natalie Hughes dished 24 assists, Chloe Sweitzer had eight digs, Bailey Thede chipped in seven digs, and Talena Rogers served a pair of aces.

Boys soccer

Genoa-Kingston 5, Oregon 3: The Hawks fell into the consolation bracket of the Big Northern tournament with a road loss to the Cogs.

Joey Gelander scored two goals for Oregon (3-7), and Ryan Hussung had a goal and an assist. Alan Acosta and Adam Thorsen also added assists, and Owen Ketter made 14 saves in goal.

The Hawks will play again Wednesday against Winnebago at Oregon Park West.

SATURDAY’S RESULTS

Rock Falls def. Erie-Prophetstown 26-24, 25-11: It took a little time for the Rockets to get going Saturday morning, but they eventually found their stride for a two-set win over the Panthers at Tabor Gym.

Claire Bickett slammed 15 kills, and Denali Stonitsch had 17 assists and 10 digs for the Rockets. Nicolette Udell and Rylee Johnson each had three kills, with Udell adding two blocks and 14 points, and Johnson chipping in six digs. Carly Kobbeman had seven digs for Rock Falls.

Milledgeville def. Stockton 16-25, 27-25, 25-23: The Missiles dropped the first set but rallied back to narrowly capture the next two sets for the NUIC win.

Ali Mertz led the Missiles with nine kills and 12 assists, while Adriana Miller added seven kills and 21 digs. Grace Jacobs contributed 11 assists and 13 digs, and. Carisa Hubbard had 17 digs.

West Carroll def. Polo 25-14, 25-23: The Thunder cruised in the first set and held on in the second to beat the Marcos.

Polo’s Nicole Boelens had seven assists, two aces and four digs. Becca Wagner had eight kills and five digs. Harper Clark had 13 digs and a kill.

Dakota def. AFC 25-9, 25-12: The Raiders lost an NUIC crossover match at home.

Emily Berogan had three kills, and Brittney Mundell added two blocks and a kill for AFC. Sara Ramadani had three digs, and Jessica Milligan finished with three assists and an ace.

Oregon def. Forreston 25-7, 25-19: The Hawks won a nonconference match at the Blackhawk Center.

College tennis

Skyhawks split: Playing a pair of duals at Westwood to avoid the rain, the Sauk Valley men’s tennis team fell, 9-0, to College of Lake County on Saturday, then bounced back to beat Illinois Valley, 7-2, on Sunday.

Against IVCC, the Skyhawks got singles wins from Preston Engel at No. 1 (6-2, 7-6 (3)), Daniel Ferguson at No. 2 (6-2, 6-0), Zach Wallace at No. 3 (6-2, 7-6 (5)), Jacob Terveer at No. 4 (7-5, 6-4), and Jonathan Rhodes at No. 5 (6-1, 7-5). Engel and Ferguson teamed up for a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, and Rhodes and Imanol Aburto notched a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

The closest match in Saturday’s loss was at No. 3 doubles, where Rhodes and Aburto fell 6-4, 6-4.

College track & field

SVCC runs in Dubuque: The Skyhawks competed in their second meet of the season in brutal weather conditions Saturday, part of an 11-team field at the University of Dubuque that also involved NCAA Division II and Division III and NAIA schools.

Katelynn Trobaugh won the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best time. She ranks 25th in the nation in the NJCAA in the 100 hurdles and 16th in the 400 hurdles.

Madison Bland made her Sauk debut, faring well in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs.

On the men’s side, Cameron Abell finished fifth in the pole vault and now ranks 14th in the NJCAA in that event. Also, the middle distance runners all ran collegiate personal bests.
