High school sports roundup for Thursday, May 6

Bryce Boylen pitched a complete-game shutout to lift Genoa-Kingston’s softball team to a 6-0 win over visiting Byron in Big Northern Conference action Thursday.

Boylen gave four hits while tallying five strikeouts and zero walks. Logan Neblock homered to get the scoring started for the Cogs.

Kaneland 8, Morris 3: At Morris, Olivia Ortegel was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as the Knights posted the Interstate Eight Conference win.

Abby Latka went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Gabriella Gonzales drove in a pair of runs. Grace Algrim earned the win, striking out six in four shutout innings.

Naperville Central 7, DeKalb 6: At Naperville Central, the Barbs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but wound up losing the DuPage Valley Conference contest.

Abby Stoffa had four RBIs for DeKalb.

Durand 14, Kirkland Hiawatha 0: At Kirkland Hiawatha, the Hawks managed only three singles in suffering a five-inning loss.

BASEBALL

Waubonsie Valley 10, DeKalb 0: At Waubonsie Valley, the Barbs lost in DVC action as the Warriors completed the series sweep.

Ottawa 5, Kaneland 4: At Kaneland, the Knights lost the Interstate Eight Conference game but Sebastian Cabeza stayed hot, going 3 for 4 and scoring two runs.

Carter Askew was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Brady Popovich scattered three hits over four innings, striking out nine and giving up only one earned run.

GIRLS SOCCER

Kaneland 4, Rosary 0: At Rosary, Taylor Carlson scored twice for the Knights in their nonconference win.

Brigid Gannon and Katie Kurz also had goals.

BOYS TENNIS

Waubonsie Valley 7, DeKalb 0: At Waubonsie Valley, Zach Kaczka and Pano Tsiftilis had the Barbs’ most competitive match as the doubles team dropped a three-set decision.

DeKalb fell to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the DVC.

WRESTLING

Kaneland d. Geneva, Ottawa: At Kaneland, the Knights picked up a pair of nonconference wins, defeating Geneva, 45-24, and Ottawa, 55-24.

Against Geneva, Kaneland received wins from Cameron Phillips (106), Caden Grabowski (120), Dean Baldridge (126), Lane Robinson (152), Jake Franzen (160), Jack Yore (170), Miles Ripper (220) and Nate Diaz (285).

Against Ottawa, the Knights’ winners were Phillips (106), Anthony Morales (113), Grabowski (120), Ade Sanni (138), Christian Duffing (145), Robinson (152), Franzen (160), Diego Serriteno (182), Ripper (220) and Diaz (285).

BOYS TRACK

Indian Creek triangular: At Indian Creek, the host Timberwolves totaled 80 points to easily outdistance Hinckley-Big Rock (49) and Somonauk (13).

Cameron Russell won the high jump, 400 and triple jump for Indian Creek, which also got two wins apiece from Christian Miller (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Lucas Woodbury (100, 200). TJ Springer (pole vault), David Negrete (shot put) and Ben Parnow (discus) also had first-place finishes.

GIRLS TRACK

Indian Creek triangular: At Indian Creek, the Timberwolves (58 points) held off Hinckley-Big Rock (42) for first place, while Somonauk (32) was third.

Jill Shotsberger notched first-place finishes in the 100, 200 and shot put for Indian Creek. Caroline Bend (1,600, pole vault), Kaitlyn Frazier (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Brooke Probst (high jump, triple jump) each won twice. Bethany Simpson captured the discus, and Jolee Larson took the 3,200.
