High school sports roundup for Thursday, June10

Sage Mardjetko fired a two-hitter, striking out 12 and walking only one, as Lemont’s softball team shut out Ottawa, 2-0, to win the championship of its own Class 3A sectional Thursday.

Kayle Purgatorio went 3 for 3, tripling twice and scoring the game’s only runs. Lily Schuit knocked in Purgatorio with a first-inning groundout, and Frankie Rita’s RBI in the fifth provided the Indians an insurance run.

Lemont advances to the Ottawa supersectional and will play Washington at 6 p.m. Monday.

Joliet Catholic 10, Manteno 0: At Manteno, the Angels captured a Class 2A sectional championship.

Winning pitcher Andie Broniewicz went the distance in the circle, striking out seven and scattering six hits.

JCA (20-17) advances to the supersectional and will play Washington at 4 p.m. Monday at Rosemont Stadium.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Lockport 2, Lincoln-Way Central 0: At Lockport, the top-seeded Porters won, 25-10, 25-17, to capture their own regional final.

Matt Arens tallied six kills, eight digs and one ace for Lockport, which advances to the Minooka Sectional and will play No. 2 Lincoln-Way West at noon Saturday. Carter Steffgen added five kills, and Evan Dziadkowiec dished out 15 assists.

No. 4 Lincoln-Way Central (8-8) was led by Will Hinchliffe (one ace, two kills, two blocks, four assists) and Michael Greco (five kills, two blocks).

Lincoln-Way East 2, Lemont 0: At Marian Catholic, Tyler Walenga pounded 10 kills, and the second-seeded Griffins won their fifth regional championship in a row by capturing a 25-14, 25-18 decision.

Ian Nicholson added three aces and four kills, Owen Morrow lofted 26 assists, and Jon Guch had seven kills and 10 digs.

Lincoln-Way East (17-5) advances to the Marist sectional and will play No. 3 Sandburg at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lincoln-Way West 2, Plainfield North 0: At Lincoln-Way West, the second-seeded Warriors won their own regional final, 25-20, 25-21.

Lincoln-Way West advances to the Minooka Sectional and will play top-seeded Lockport at noon Saturday.

BOYS TENNIS

IHSA State Tournament: In Class 2A, Lockport doubles partners Douglas Blomquist and Peter Naylor won their opening match before dropping their next two.

Lincoln-Way East’s John Kenny and Manuel Tsoukatos went 0-2, as did the Griffins’ doubles team of Andrew Ernst/Tanner Leonard.

Minooka’s Manny Campuzano rebounded from an opening-round loss to win his next two before being eliminated in the third round of the consolation bracket.

Lincoln-Way Central’s Collin Bush won his first match but then dropped two straight. His teammates, doubles partners Matthew Soldan and Aidan Soldan, went 0-2.

The Lincoln-Way West doubles team of Milan Miskovic and Jacob Stermin also went 0-2.

In Class 1A, Coal City’s Tyler Johnson dropped his only two matches.

Lemont doubles partners Lemont Safin Saraiya and Nathan Svoboda went 1-2.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lockport 15, Sandburg 12: At Lockport, the second-seeded Porters ousted the sixth-seeded Eagles to advance to Friday’s 4:30 p.m. sectional final against host Lincoln-Way Central.
