Letter: Solution to Washington, D.C. lack of representation

Sauk Valley Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The Democrat-controlled House just voted to make the District of Columbia a state.

The Democrats’ argument is that the people of D.C. cannot vote for president or senators, and so are effectively disenfranchised.

There is a quicker and easier way to give those citizens the vote, if that is really what the problem is. The district covers over 60 square miles, but the central city where the federal government does its business is only a small portion of the whole.

Why not just give about 55 square miles back to the state of Maryland? That will give the people full representation.

Unfortunately, the real purpose is just to provide two more guaranteed Democratic votes in the Senate.
