Area roundup: Sterling boys can’t keep up with Galesburg in WB6 loss

Newman boys cruise to Three Rivers East road win; Rock Falls girls roll to Big Northern road win over Oregon

Sterling's JP Schilling gets past a Galesburg defender for a layup during the Golden Warriors' 73-48 Western Big 6 road loss to the Silver Streaks on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022 at John Thiel Gymnasium.

Sophomore Andre Klaver set the tone early for Sterling against Galesburg on Tuesday night in Western Big 6 action at John Thiel Gymnasium.

He netted 13 of the Golden Warriors’ 15 points in the first quarter, but the guard was shut down by the Silver Streaks after that, and Galesburg ended up with a 74-48 win in a game in which Sterling never held a lead.

“Andre came out and was aggressive early and he got some easy buckets, but unfortunately we weren’t able to stop Galesburg on the defensive end,” Sterling coach Ryan Vasquez said. “I think they scored on 12 out of their first 13 possessions.”

The Golden Warriors (15-9, 3-6 WB6) faced a 24-15 deficit at the end of the first eight minutes, and they trailed the Streaks 35-27 at halftime. Sterling was behind 48-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

Besides lone senior Tyree Kelly, the rest of Sterling’s lineup is comprised of seven juniors and four sophomores – and at times, the Golden Warriors’ youth was on full display versus the Streaks.

“We’re young and we’re learning, but at the same time, you have to give credit to Galesburg. They’re dominant with their bigs and their point guard. They made us feel uncomfortable tonight,” Vasquez said. “We’re just moving on because everything is better when you’re making shots, and we weren’t making shots tonight.”

Besides Klaver, JP Schilling was the only other Sterling player who finished with double digits; the junior point guard chipped in 12 points.

Senior post Koen Derry finished with 22 points and nine rebounds for the Streaks (19-5, 5-4), while senior Dre Egipciaco chipped in 17 points and 11 rebounds, and junior Easton Steck added 13 points.
