Boys Golf: Led by medalist Jann Atendido, IC Catholic Prep wins first sectional title in 40 years

BYRON – Jann Atendido shot an even-par 72 to earn medalist honors, leading the IC Catholic Prep boys golf team to its first sectional title in 40 years at Monday’s Class 1A Byron Sectional at Prairieview Golf Club.

Atendido shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine with two birdies and seven pars on his way to a four-shot win over Byron’s Brayden Baker.

“I think my irons were the key,” Atendido said. “My driver, I was kind of messing with that and it wasn’t perfect, but it was working enough.”

Atendido, sectional medalist for the second straight year, only recently found out about the history that the Knights made.

“The goal was to make it down to state as a team,” he said. “I just found out earlier than our school’s golf team has not made it down to state as a team in about 40 years, so the goal was to make it down to state. Winning is a bonus.”

Atendido’s younger brother, sophomore Zazz Atendido, tied for fourth with a 77. PJ Wisniewski shot an 80 for 14th and Johnny Hilgart and Nick Zanoni both shot 83s. IC Catholic Prep shot a 312, with North Shore Country Day second (320) and Riverdale third (330).

“I think it’s really cool. It’s my first time doing this, and we thought it was going to be hard in this sectional,” Zazz Atendido said. “But our main goal was to get here first, and then after that, we could just focus on qualifying for state.

“I think it was mostly my putting that was working, but I hit a lot of good drives out there, too, to help my irons out a lot.”
