Firefighters from companies across the Illinois Valley rushed to rural Spring Valley on Sunday afternoon to extinguish a fire encompassing an unspecified number of acres. Stray embers from a controlled burn are believed to be the source.

A Park City man grabbed a hold of a tree along a trail to get a better view of the Hennepin Canyon at Starved Rock State Park on Saturday afternoon. He slipped, turned 180 degrees and lost his grip of the tree trunk, falling 81 feet into the canyon.

Fire departments from La Salle, Bureau and Putnam counties responded to a large brushfire on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, along Interstate 80 near mile post 65 in Bureau County. A call for assistance was sent out about 11:45 a.m. and upgraded to a fourth alarm. Interstate 80 was shut down in the eastbound lane while firefighters doused the flames.
