The Providence Catholic competitive dance team earned the Class 1A State Championship on Saturday with a score of 91. 34.
Because of COVID-19 concerns, the meet was conducted virtually.
Providence’s score was the best in the 30-team field as they edged Highland (90.26) for the title. Joliet Catholic took third at 89.78, while Morris was fourth at 89.58.
In the Class 3A meet, Minooka won a spot on the podium with a third place finish and a score of 94.06. Stevenson won that division with a score of 95.64.
Lincoln-Way West was the top local finisher at the Class 2A meet as they took fourth with a score of 90.00, Geneva claimed the title in that division tallying a 94.32.
Other local squads that participated in the state event were Plainfield South (Class 3A, 13th place, 84.50), Plainfield North (3A, 15th, 84.28), Plainfield Central (3A, 17th, 83.36), Lincoln-Way Central (3A, 18th, 82.8), Joliet West (3A, 23rd, 81.8), Plainfield East (3A, 28th, 79.58), Lemont (2A, 30th, 76.16), Gardner-South Wilmington (1A, 12th, 77.58) and Seneca (1A, 28th, 70.82).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Lincoln-Way Central came away with a narrow 61-57 overtime win on the road Saturday against Lockport thanks in large part to a 21-point game from Nick Tingley.
James Ogrodnik added 14 points for the Knights in the win, and Frank DeCarlo scored 10.
Matas Deksnys scored 22 points and Angelo Vassilakis added 16 for the Porters.
Kaneland 52, Morris 28: At Morris, Jamari Weeks scored 24 points for the visiting Knights as they proved too much to handle for Morris.
Morris fell to 3-4 overall with the loss.
Bradley-Bourbonnais 43, Lincoln-Way West 32: At Bradley, the Warriors fell to 3-8 overall after a low-scoring performance on the road against the Boilermakers.
Connor Jenkins led all scorers with 15 points in the loss.
Dwight 76, Midland 65: At Varna, the Trojans picked up a solid road win over Midland as five separate players reached double-digit scoring.
Brandon Ceylor led the way with 17 points for Dwight (8-6), while Abe Rieke added 16, Isaac Telford scored 12 and Jeremy Kapper and Wyatt Thompson pitched in 10 points apiece.
Beecher 64, Gardner-South Wilmington 34: At Beecher, the Panthers suffered their first River Valley Conference loss of the season in catastrophic fashion as the Bobcats delivered a 30-point walloping at home.
Nate Wise scored 18 points as the loss dropped G-SW to 9-6 overall and 9-1 in the RVC.
Lincoln-Way East 59, Providence 38: At Frankfort, the Griffins improved to 4-6 overall with a home win over Providence.
Oswego East 69, Plainfield South 64: At Plainfield, the Wolves picked up a road win to improve their record to 9-2 overall.
The loss dropped Plainfield South to 7-3.
Plainfield Central 57, Plainfield North 39: At Plainfield Central, the Wildcats earned a win over the cross-town Tigers.
The victory ended Central’s season with a winning record at 6-5 overall.
Carmel 60, Joliet Catholic 59: At Mundelein, the Hillmen came up just short on the road against the Corsairs.
The loss dropped JCA to 2-7 overall this season.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lincoln-Way Central 43, Lockport 27: At Lockport, Azyah Newson-Cole and Haley Stoklosa shared the scoring lead for the Knights in a strong road victory over the Porters.
Nicole Connolly added eight points for Central as it improved to 9-4 overall. The loss dropped Lockport to 6-6 on the season.
Lincoln-Way West 67, Bradley-Bourbonnais 58: At Bradley, the Warriors outdueled the Boilermakers in a high-scoring affair to snatch a road victory.
Tara Gugliuzza led the way for West with 29 points, while Evan Pittman scored 18. The Warriors improved to 10-1 with the win.
Joliet West 48, Yorkville 29: At Yorkville, the Tigers finished their regular season at 11-1 after a strong road win against Yorkville.
Lisa Thompson led the way with 15 points, while Maliyah Walker scored 10 and Grace Walsh added nine points.
Joliet Central 58, Minooka 43: At Minooka, the Steelmen improved to 10-2 overall with a commanding road win over Minooka.
Jalysa Stokes scored 21 points for Joliet Central in the victory, while Ashanti Brown added 16.
Maizy Caves scored 16 points for Minooka in the loss.
Plainfield East 47, Oswego 41: At Oswego, the Bengals came away with a hard-fought road win over the Panthers.
Providence 54, DePaul Prep 37: At Chicago, the Celtics improved their conference standing to 8-0 with a comfortable road win over DePaul Prep.
Annalise Pietrzyk led the way with 14 points for Providence, while Gabi Bednar scored 11 and Ashley Raymer had eight.

SouthWest Suburban Conference Girls Bowling Tournament
Lockport 6,523, Lincoln-Way East 5,487, Andrew 5,245, Lincoln-Way West 5,168, Lincoln-Way Central 5,023, Stagg 5,019, Bradley-Bourbonnais 4,283, Sandburg 3,721, Bolingbrook 3,498: At Orland Bowl, the Porters came out in force at the conference tournament and finished with six bowlers in the top seven individual scorers. Only five of those scores factored into Lockport’s final team total of 6,523, but that didn’t stop any of them from shooting for the top of the leaderboard.
Lockport junior Emma Punter had the best overall day with a six-game total of 1,394 and an eye-popping top game of 278. The next three scores came from Punter’s teammates Payton Vandenberg (1,356), Chloe Sizega (1,255) and Isabella Colon (1,232).
Lincoln-Way East’s Kaitlyn Marks (1180) took fifth place, before the final two Porters in Demetra Kontos (1,176) and Morgan LiCausi (1,151) finished in sixth- and seventh-place.
Rounding out the top 10, all of whom were named to the All-Conference team, were Lincoln-Way East’s Sara Tripi (1,128), Lincoln-Way Central’s Lauren Davern (1,122) and Andrew’s Lianne Forster (1,112).
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Joliet Junior College 6-7, Sauk Valley 5-2 (DH): At Joliet, the Wolves secured their first two wins of the season against Sauk Valley in a Saturday doubleheader.
Noah Mazza’s base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning won Game 1 for JJC, 6-5, while Marcus Seguin led the way to a 7-2 victory in Game 2 by throwing five hitless innings and striking out 10 batters.
