3 Things to Know About Skin Cancer

As warm weather approaches, so do thoughts of spending time outdoors in the lovely sunshine. While it’s common knowledge that sunscreen is necessary to keep our skin safe from damaging ultraviolet rays, there are things you should know that may help you understand how necessary this step is. Here are 3 things to know about skin cancer:

1. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and there are several different types. It’s important to know which type you may have, because it will determine your treatment options and prognosis. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

2. Basal and squamous cell skin cancers are common and usually treatable. Check your skin regularly to spot new growths or abnormal areas, and alert your doctor before the growths can turn into skin cancer.

3. Melanoma skin cancer is less common, but is more likely to spread to other parts of the body. Although not all melanomas develop from moles, certain types of moles are more likely to develop into melanoma, so it’s crucial to have moles and other growths checked by a doctor.

To help prevent skin cancer, wear an adequate amount of sunscreen when spending time outdoors, and reapply often. Wear a hat to protect your face and scalp, and wear sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around your eyes. Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps, as they can cause long-term damage to your skin.
