Roundup: Sterling volleyball cruises to win in season opener

Newman, West Carroll also notch conference victories to start season

The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Sterling volleyball team cruised in its season opener Tuesday night in Galesburg, defeating the Silver Streaks 25-15, 25-10 in a Western Big 6 match.

Brook Borum had 12 kills and three aces for the Golden Warriors, while Grace Egan added nine kills and a block. Bree Borum finished with 18 assists, five kills, seven digs and two blocks, Riley Dittmar dished 10 assists, and Amayia Hernandez chipped in five digs. Brook Borum, Egan and Dittmar had four digs apiece.

Newman def. Hall 2-0: The Comets claimed victory in their season opener, defeating the Red Devils 25-16, 25-17 in a Three Rivers East match in Spring Valley.

Ally Clevenger led Newman with seven kills, 10 digs, two blocks and two aces, with Jess Johns spiking six kills. Katie Grennan and Shae McNeill each dished eight assists and served two aces, and Kennedy Rowzee added four kills and four blocks.

Princeton def. Bureau Valley 2-1: The Storm won the first set, but dropped their season opener at the Storm Cellar in Manlius, falling to the Three Rivers rival Tigresses 22-25, 25-20, 25-18.

Kamryn Kolb and Kyra Stoller each had six kills, with Stoller adding three blocks, four digs, nine points and three aces, and Kolb stuffing two blocks. Lauren Wirth dished 11 assists, Lexie Marquez added 13 digs and seven service points, and Ashley Nordstrom chipped in three kills and 10 digs.

McKenzie Hecht slammed 10 kills for Princeton, and Maya Gartin and Madison Richards added eight each. Katie Bates led the Tigresses with 23 assists and 10 digs.

West Carroll def. Stockton 2-0: Katie McGinnis had four kills, three aces and two blocks to lead the Thunder to a 25-17, 25-21 victory in their season opener in Savanna.

Madison Haynes spiked five kills to go with six digs, and Lacey Eissens added four for West Carroll (1-0). Hailee Hairing had 11 assists, eight digs and a block, while Daisy Rose McCray served four aces, and Lily O’Connor also had eight digs.
