Area roundup: Newman girls can’t hold off Bureau Valley; Morrison girls rolls past Riverdale

The Newman girls basketball team led at halftime Monday night against Bureau Valley, but the Storm rallied in the second half to pick up a Three Rivers East win at the Storm Cellar in Manlius.

Jess Johns had 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead Newman (1-18, 0-7 TRAC East), while Shannon Kelly scored 13 points, and Ady Waldschmidt added 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Comets led 29-21 at halftime, and pushed the lead to as many as 11 points in the third quarter before BV came back.

Kate Salisbury hit three 3-pointers and finished with 27 points for the Storm, Jennifer Etheridge scored 10 points, and Ashley Nordstrom pulled down eight rebounds. Lexie Marquez chipped in four rebounds, four assists and three steals for BV.

Morrison 54, Riverdale 32: The Fillies led 26-12 by halftime and never looked back in a Three Rivers West win at home.

Shelby Veltrop had 18 points, five rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals to lead Morrison, which pulled away with a 17-7 scoring edge in the third quarter. Camryn Veltrop finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two assists, and Diana Robbins added 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Jordan Eads had five points and three steals, Kendra Fisher chipped in four points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Kalli Fisher dished four assists for the Fillies.

Carrieanne Hungate’s seven points led Riverdale, and Ryalynn Grant scored six.

Erie-Prophetstown 26, Orion 23: The Panthers pulled out a close win in a Three Rivers East game in Erie.

Durand 35, Milledgeville 26: The Missiles kept it close, but couldn’t catch up to the Bulldogs in an NUIC crossover loss on the road.

Lily Smith led the way with nine points and 13 rebounds for Milledgeville, which trailed 8-7 after the first quarter, 21-17 at halftime, and 29-22 through three periods. Adriana Miller added seven points and seven rebounds, and Rylee Matthews finished with four points and eight rebounds. Olivia Schurman scored six points for the Missiles.

Emmie Nyen had 10 points for Durand, Elaina Nyen scored nine, and Olivia Robinson and Alissa Moore added eight points each.

Boys basketball

Milledgeville 53, Polo 37: The Missiles jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the opening quarter en route to an NUIC South victory over the rival Marcos in Milledgeville.

Kieren Harris poured in 20 points to lead Milledgeville, and Kacen Johnson and Connor Nye added 10 points each. Bryce Aude scored six, and Izaac Toms-Smith chipped in five.

Brock Soltow, Carter Merdian and Kahlil Sankey scored nine points apiece for Polo. Tyler Merdian added six points, and Cooper Blake scored four.

Eastland 43, Lena-Winslow 41: Kellen Henze scored the winning basket while sitting on the court as the Cougars rallied in the fourth quarter to pick up an NUIC crossover win.

Henze had 19 points, including the final two. He drove to the basket and missed a shot, falling to the ground in the process. But the rebound fell right into his hands, and he put up one last shot without even getting up; it went through the net as the final buzzer sounded.

Andy Anderson added eight points, Jaxson Sturtevant scored six, and Carsen Heeren finished with five for the Cougars, who outscored Le-Win 17-11 in the final period after trailing 14-10 after the first quarter, 23-20 at halftime, and 30-26 through three periods.

Brody Mahon’s 13 points paced the Panthers.

Girls bowling

Sterling 2,507, Erie-Prophetstown 2,156: The Golden Warriors won all three games to top the Panthers in a dual in Fulton.

Hannah Conderman opened her 542 series with a 201 game for Sterling, while Katelynn Garcia added a 468 series, and Emily Doss had a 454. Brendy Gatica (413), Kailynn Wickham (361) and Madison Schmitt (269) also bowled for the Warriors.

Hannah Neumiller led E-P with a 410 series, while Phoebe DeNeve rolled a 388 series, and Khloee Rangel had a 380. Naudia Ritemon (348), Ysabell Hamm (330) and Jolene Wells (300) rounded out the Panthers’ lineup.

Oregon 2,485, Rochelle 2,416: The Hawks won two of the three games in a dual against the Hubs to claim a close victory on the road.

Ava Wight’s 509 series led Oregon, while Mackenzie Alford added a 474, and Paige Beauchem had a 439. Kendra Ehrler (408), Trinity Hultquist (367) and Kylie Krug (288) also competed for the Hawks.

Cassidy Vincent led Rochelle with a dual-high 544 series and 212 game, with Anna Samo adding a 471 series, and Faith Adams rolling a 438.

Wrestling

Polo 2-1 in Princeton: The Marcos defeated North Boone 72-6 and Somonauk 63-6, but lost to the host Tigers 40-27 in a quadrangular.

Wyatt Doty won three matches at 126 pounds for Polo, taking two by pin and one by decision. Lucas Nelson (132) won a pair of contested bouts, both by pin.

Braydon Altherr (160) and Devin Rucker (170) added pins against Princeton. Clay Davis (138), Nicholas Cain (152), Wyatt Queckboerner (182) and Daniel Engel (285) had pins against North Boone, with Maddux Hayden (195) and Blake Diehl (220) adding decisions. Wyatt Meiners (120) won a decision against Somonauk, and the Marcos received eight forfeits in that dual.

Youth baseball

Al Morrison fundraiser: The Al Morrison Baseball League in Dixon will be hosting its second annual Trivia Night fundraiser on Sunday, March 5.

The event will be held at the Elks Lodge in Dixon. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6 and trivia at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 each, or two for $60; a reserved team table of 8 participants is available for $225.

Silent and live auction items will also be available. Proceeds will go to Al Morrison Baseball and their “Light the Diamonds” campaign to install lights at more fields in Page Park.
