A driver escaped an attempted carjacking at a Downers Grove gas station Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

A customer was filling vehicle’s tank at the BP station at 4314 Main St. about 1:15 p.m. when two Black men got out of a dark-colored Dodge minivan and approached, according to a news release from the Downers Grove Police Department. One of the men pointed a handgun at the customer, who ran away. Nobody was injured.

The would-be thieves weren’t able to start the vehicle so they returned to the minivan, where two other people were waiting inside, the news release said.

They fled in the minivan and headed north on Main Street. The minivan was last seen entering eastbound I-88 at Highland Avenue.

Anyone with information about this case should call the Downers Grove Police Department at (630) 434-5600.
