Boys Basketball: Cade Hardtke, Glenbard South rally past Glenbard East

Hardtke hits four late technical free throws, scores 21 points in 71-60 Raiders’ victory

GLEN ELLYN – There were several worthy candidates in the aftermath of Glenbard South overcoming a double-digit halftime deficit to Glenbard East Thursday in Glen Ellyn.

“We went to a 2-3 (zone),” said D’Manuel Payton, the Raiders’ sixth man said of the difference-maker in a 71-60 Upstate Eight Conference boys basketball victory.

Glenbard South erupted for 50 second-half points, 33 coming in the decisive fourth quarter.

Glenbard East was seemingly still in business with a half-minute to play when Terrence Spencer hit two of his four fourth-quarter 3-pointers in a five-second span.

But Glenbard South scored the last eight points at the free-throw line.

The Rams imploded with consecutive technical fouls in the waning seconds.

The Raiders’ Cade Hardtke converted all four technical foul shots to finish with a team-high 21 points.

“We just pulled away with defense in the second half,” said Payton, who scored points. “I could sense (the game) changing at the beginning of the third quarter.”

Foul shooting was a game-long issue for both teams.

“It’s a lost art,” said Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke, whose team finished 22-for-33.

“It’s been an issue all season,” said Glenbard East coach Al Biancalana. “We have had problems all year in the third quarter. We miss shots and then start fighting with each other.”

Armon Yarbrough, after sitting on the pines the whole first half, scored six crucial points after the intermission.

Aryton Temcio and Yazan Blan added 12 and 11 points for Glenbard South.

Spencer scored 17 points for the Rams.

LaDonus Rogers led all scorers with 24 points for East.
