High school sports roundup for Wednesday, April 21: York’s Lauren Derkowski strikes out 17, homers in season-opening win

SOFTBALL

York 8, Downers Grove North 0

Lauren Derkowski struck out 17 and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a homer and two runs batted in for the Dukes (1-0) in their season opener. Lindsey Bingham went 3-for-3 with a double, Molly Loch was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Marian Blass 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Wheaton Warrenville South 10, Naperville Central 0

Katey Pierce struck out 10 and Maggie Reinert went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Tigers (4-1). Grace Butler was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Glenbard West 5, Lyons 3

Kiley Koziol (3-0) struck out nine and was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs for the Hilltoppers. Stacia Gregule was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

BASEBALL

Nazareth 8, Romeoville 7

Luke Brabham’s walk-off single, his third hit of the day, completed the Roadrunners’ rally from four runs down. Justin Gutierrez was 2-for-2 with two walks, Cooper Malamazian drove in two runs and Colin Lukas one for Nazareth (6-0). Freshman John Hughes picked up the win in relief, going four innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Willowbrook d. Hinsdale South (26-24, 25-27, 25-18

Calli Kenny had 11 kills and 22 digs, Grace Reckamp had 10 kills, nine assists and six blocks and Stephanie Dasbach nine blocks and six kills as the Warriors (9-2, 6-0 West Suburban Gold) wrapped up an undefeated championship of the West Suburban Gold. Katie Linnig had 10 assists and eight digs and Elizabeth Bruschuk 28 digs.

Lemont d. Oak Forest 25-12, 25-23

Amanda Rice had eight kills, Mary Kate Arundel five kills and Paige Connolly 18 assists for the Indians.

Glenbard West d. Glenbard North 25-15, 25-15

Natalie Charintranond delivered two big serving streaks Wednesday that helped Glenbard West defeat Glenbard North in Glen Ellyn to sweep all three District 87 opponents this season.

After the Hilltoppers (10-3) trailed by three points twice early in the second set, Charintranond broke open a 14-14 tie with a nine-point service streak that included four of her five aces, including three in a row.

Charintranond finished off the first set with a six-point streak that carried the Hilltoppers from an 18-14 to 24-14 lead. Setter Haydon Green’s dump kill ended the set.

Avery Herbert had seven kills and Green had five kills, 11 assists and four digs. Other big contributors included Marin Johnson (four kills, ace), Emorey Kennebeck (three kills, two blocks), Demi Carpio (six digs), Maeve Campanella (five service points, four digs), Makayla Webber (three kills), Liz Murray (four digs) and Bella Fues (four service points, three assists).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Timothy Christian d. Chicago Christian 25-17, 25-18

Kyle Teune had 11 kills and 13 digs, Jason Westra 20 assists, Ben Tameling five kills and Kyle Steiner 11 digs for the Trojans.

Glenbard East d. Waubonsie Valley 25-18, 25-16

Trevor Real (seven kills, three digs), Bartek Kwidzinski (six kills, three digs), Connor Soto (16 assists, two aces, three digs, two kills) led the Rams.
