St. Charles Park District: Let’s play (soft)ball!

Need an excuse to exercise? To (re)connect with friends? To destress? Check off all the boxes by signing up for the St. Charles Park District softball league. Spring registration is now open.

New this year is a men’s 12-inch softball league for ages 30 and older on Friday nights, and co-ed 12-inch leagues on Monday and Wednesday nights.

The park district will also offer 12-inch men’s only leagues for ages 18 and older on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and for ages 30 and older on Thursdays. Additionally, co-ed 14-inch leagues will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Sanctioned by OneNation, the leagues meet at East Side Sports Complex and Pottawatomie Park from May-August. Post season includes a tournament with awards to the top finishers.

And whether you grew up playing “sandlot” baseball (but haven’t touched a ball since) or played softball competitively in college, all levels of experience are welcome.

The reasons for teams to sign up for the league may vary, but the benefits of playing spring softball are plenty.

“Softball is a great way to meet new people, exercise and improve your mental health,” said Megan Hatheway, athletic supervisor.

Running provides aerobic benefits, and batting, throwing and catching all contribute to upper body development. Additionally, softball develops hand-eye coordination and sharpens players’ mental focus.

Players may agree the physical and mental benefits are a bonus, but for many it’s the social aspect that keeps them coming back. Teams consist of neighbors, friends, co-workers or family members, to connect, form friendships and above all, have fun.

For co-ed softball team coach Jessica Swanson-Wicks, she joined the league with friends the summer after graduating from college.

“We loved the idea of being able to get together one night a week to play ball and enjoy each other’s company,” she said. This season will mark her team’s 10th year playing together.

“It’s a great environment for players as well as their families,” she added. “The league has always had a great reputation. The umpires are fun and know the rules, and the park district staff are always there in case of a dispute or question.”
