Another new development is coming to Route 53 corridor on Romeoville’s east side.

The village announced plans to build a 6,800-square-foot retail building with a drive-thru at 639 N. Independence Blvd. The site used to have a shuttered used-car dealership and is located just south of Greenwood Avenue, according to a news release.

“We are excited to continue the redevelopment of the Route 53 corridor,” Mayor John Noak said in a statement.

Noak said the new building space will allow for five new restaurants or retailers to set up shop.

Once the approval process is complete, site work could start this summer or fall for an opening in spring 2023. The developer will be working on occupants for the future storefronts.

The village has announced multiple development projects along its Route 53 corridor over the past few years.

A second Jimmy John’s location is planned for Romeo Plaza just south of 135th Street.

A new Starbucks is being built just north of 135th Street.

The village also is expanding its Athletics and Events Center, which will include a new 20,000-square-foot aquatic center. The aquatic center will feature Romeoville’s first large-scale splash pad and indoor pool.
