Woman will not face charges in connection with Joliet shooting

Charges not filed ‘based on the available evidence,’ prosecutor’s spokeswoman said

A woman who was arrested in connection with a shooting on Joliet’s West Side will not face any charges related to the incident.

Sharnesia Cooley, 27, of the first block of Earl Avenue was arrested June 15 after she was identified by police as the suspect who fired a handgun at a man on Earl Avenue, Joliet police said in a news release.

Will County State Attorney spokeswoman Carole Cheney said Friday that Cooley will not face charges over the incident.

“No charges are being filed at the present time based on the available evidence,” Cheney said.

Officers initially responded to a report of a possible shooting before 1:30 p.m. June 15, and police said they determined that Cooley “had fired a handgun at an adult male victim, missing him. Cooley then fled the area in a vehicle. Further investigation revealed that a nearby unoccupied vehicle was struck by the round Cooley had fired.”

Officers subsequently checked the area, conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle and arrested Cooley.

The officers were unable to locate the weapon that was used, police said.
