DIXON — Jared Shaner, who has been Dixon High School’s athletics director for six years, will be the school’s principal starting July 1.
Dixon Public Schools board of education approved the recommendation on Wednesday night.
Earlier this year, DHS principal Mike Grady announced his retirement.
“I believe that we are doing great things in our school district, and I am excited to continue what Dr. Grady has worked on over the past few years as well as bring my own style to the role of DHS principal,” said Shaner in a news release issued by the district. “Dixon is a wonderful community and my family and I are grateful to be a part of it.”
In addition to serving as AD, Shaner has been the football coach the last two seasons.
Shaner has a master’s degree in educational administration from Illinois State University. He also has a bachelor’s degree in special education from ISU. He is a Prophetstown High School graduate.
He has been a teacher, coach and administrator for 22 years. Before Dixon, he worked at Mount Vernon Township High School, Lincoln Community High School and Stanford Olympia High School.
Shaner resides in Dixon. His wife Erinne is also a Prophetstown grad. Their three children are products of the Dixon schools: Jozie graduated with the Class of 2020 while Tyler is a sophomore and Cullen is a freshman.
District Superintendent Margo Empen said Shaner was selected during a second round of interviews with candidates by a committee of eight teachers and administrators.
“Jared’s skill set, leadership qualities, and ability to make connections and build relationships made him the best candidate for the position,” she said.
During the search process, Empen emphasized the importance of having a candidate who was available to have a period of transition to work alongside Grady. Hiring in-house accomplishes that.
“Dr. Grady is leaving a legacy and big shoes to fill, and we are confident that Jared will continue to lead the quality academic and social-emotional work being done at DHS,” Empen said. “We are excited to see Jared take over this new role, and we will support him in his efforts.”
