Local roundup: Newman boys win season opener on the road

Fulton boys remain undefeated; Dixon, Sterling, Rock Falls girls notch conference victories

The Newman Comets boys basketball finally opened its season Friday night, traveling to Peru and returning with a 72-68 win over the St. Bede Bruins.

Newman (1-0, 1-0 Three Rivers East) led 39-28 at halftime and 50-45 after three quarters.

Marcus Williams scored 21 points to lead the Comets. Jake Ackman added 12, Andrew Velasquez scored 11, and Nolan Britt and Luke Jungerman each scored seven.

Fulton 63, Riverdale 52: The Steamers remained unbeaten, improving to 7-0 with a home win over Three Rivers East foe Rams.

Connor Barnett scored 19 points, and Kyler Pessman scored 16.

Rockridge 70, Morrison 34: The Mustangs fell in a Three Rivers West game on the road.

Alex Anderson led Morrison with 12 points.

The Rockets jumped out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter, and led 35-18 at halftime and 63-27 after three.

Erie-Prophetstown 60, Bureau Valley 38: The Panthers scored 30 points from inside the 3-point arc and 30 from beyond it in a Three Rivers East win at the Storm Cellar in Manlius.

Kolby Franks scored 20 points to pace Erie-Prophetstown, while Dawson Haggard hit four 3s for 12 points. Connor Sibley added 10 points for the Panthers, who led 18-13 after one quarter, 30-25 at halftime, and 42-33 after three periods.

Carter Salisbury scored 12 points to lead the Storm.

North Boone 70, Oregon 63: The Hawks were unable to come away with a Big Northern win on the road.

Milledgeville 51, Forreston 31: The Missiles cruised at Forreston behind 14 points from Treyton Selman.

Ryan Kendall added 11, Kieren Harris scored 10, and Daniel Lohnes added nine.

Milledgeville jumped out to an early 15-3 lead, then led 29-11 at halftime and 45-19 after three.

Eastland 55, Amboy 34: The Cougars topped the Clippers in the NUIC South battle in Amboy.

Kellen Henze led Eastland with 16 points, Drew Burkholder added 14, and Wyatt Baber chipped in eight.

Connor Simpson led the Clippers with seven points.

The game was tied 6-6 after one quarter before a 14-point second quarter put Eastland in front 20-16 at halftime.

AFC 53, Polo 49: The Raiders came through with a win over the Marcos in Ashton.

Polo jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter and led 27-25 at halftime. Polo again jumped in front in the third quarter to take a 44-39 lead heading into the final eight minutes, but the Raiders held the Marcos to five points in the fourth quarter to rally for the win.

Peyton Lanning scored 16 points for AFC, hitting four 3-pointers. Matt Thompson and Lane Koning added 11 each.

Polo got 13 points from Gavin Zell and 12 each from Tyler Merdian and Logan Kindle.

Girls basketball

Dixon 48, Rockford Christian 37: The Duchesses bounced back from their first conference loss of the season with road win over Big Northern foe Rockford Christian.

Dixon (8-2, 7-1) led 15-8 after one quarter, stretched the lead to 29-13 by halftime, and was ahead 34-22 heading into the final period.

Abby Guthrie poured in a game-high 21 points to pace the Duchesses, and Sam Tourtillott marked her return to the lineup after missing the last few games with 11 points, seven assists and seven steals. Caylyn Kimmel snared a team-high nine rebounds for Dixon.

Rock Falls 43, Stillman Valley 35: The Rockets won at Stillman in a Big Northern matchup.

Sterling 53, Alleman 34: The Golden Warriors picked up a Western Big 6 win in Rock Island.

Brooklyn Borum led the way with 26 points.

Sterling outscored the Pioneers 19-4 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Oregon 52, North Boone 24: A 19-point night from Hadley Lutz lifted the Hawks over North Boone at the Blackhawk Center.

Lutz had 10 of her points in the fourth quarter. Mariah Drake added 11 points, and Ella Martin scored nine.

The Hawks were able to break things open in the second half. After leading 13-9 after one quarter and 21-17 at halftime, Oregon used a 14-point third quarter, including 3-pointers from Martin and Ashlyn Kitzmiller, to take a 35-19 lead after three, then Lutz’s big fourth quarter helped Oregon outscore the Vikings 17-5 in the final frame.

Boys swimming

Byron 85, Belvidere 84: The Tigers eked out a tight dual victory at home Thursday, led by Dixon junior Carson Faley’s two individual wins and two relay victories.

Faley won the 100 freestyle (51.27 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (57.03), and also swam legs on the 200 medley (1:45.05) and 400 freestyle (3:35.60) relay victories.

Tyson Politsch swam on both relays, and also won the 50 freestyle (23.51) and 100 breaststoke (1:04.00). Adam Goelitz took the 200 freestyle (1:57.34) and 500 free (5:17.15), and also swam in the 400 free relay. Levi Schamper (100 butterfly) and Nathan Bell (200 IM) also won individual events and the 200 medley relay.

College volleyball

Skyhawks fall in 4 sets at Waubonsee: Sauk Valley lost 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-15 in Sugar Grove on Thursday night.

Emma Carlson had 16 kills and 15 digs, while Maddie Sands led the way with 19 digs for the Skyhawks (6-4). Lexi Greve had nine kills and four blocks, Kiley Sanders added eight kills and 12 digs, and Shannon Lytle finished with four blocks. Madison Craft dished 27 assists, and Cassie Bushman chipped in nine digs and two aces.

Sauk is back in action Wednesday when they host Carl Sandburg.
