LOCAL ROUNDUP: Oregon boys, girls win home track meet; Amboy softball, Newman boys tennis also victorious

The Oregon boys and girls track teams raced to quadrangular victories Friday at Landers-Loomis Field.

The boys put up 116 points to beat Rockford Lutheran (73), Hinckley-Big Rock (37) and Pearl City (9).

Austin Ebert raced to wins in the 110 hurdles (17.5 seconds) and 300 hurdles (45.13). Isaac Reber won the 100 in 11.65.

Daniel Dominguez threw 13.93 meters to win the shot put, and 44.10 to win the discus. Joey Gelander went 11.69 meters to win the triple jump, and Riley Benton cleared 3.50 meters to win the pole vault.

The Hawks took relay wins in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400.

On the girls side, Oregon scored 149 points to defeat Hinckley-Big Rock (20), Rockford Lutheran (11) and Pearl City (0).

Jennica Ciesel won the 3,200 (15:08.34) and the high jump (1.42 meters), Sophia Stender won the 300 hurdles (52.29 seconds) and pole vault (2.13 meters), and Lydia Cermak won the 200 (28.08) and long jump (4.59 meters). Ava Wight won the 100 (13.69) and took second in the 200 (28.94).

Also for the Hawks, Rylie Robertson win the 100 hurdles (18.74), Kaitlyn Ramirez won the 800 (2:49.98), Brenna Noon won the shot put (12.60 meters), and Jenae Bothe won the discus (37.97 meters). Bothe was second in the shot put (11.17 meters), and Noon was second in the discus (34.75 meters).

Oregon also claimed victory in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

Sterling swept at home: The Golden Warriors boys fell to United Township 116-43, and the girls lost 81-55 in a Western Big 6 dual at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

For the girls, Kierra Collins won the shot put (10.46 meters) and the discus (26.08 meters), and Sofia Rumbolz won the long jump (4.89 meters) and took second in the triple jump (10.23 seconds). Rhylee Wade won the 400 (1:09.08), Ellie Mahar won the 800 (2:44.64), and Anna Aulwes won the pole vault (2.29 meters). Sterling also won the 4x800 relay in 11:13.50 with the quartet of Sarah Navarro, Megan Gingrich, Kylie Nicklaus and Wade.

For the Sterling boys, Dale Johnson won the 800 (2:20.23) JohN Cid won the 1,600 (5:02.34), and the 4x400 relay team of Javon Bruce, Sam Brown, Owen Anderson and Ben Munoz-Ripley won in 3:45.77.

Baseball

Hinckley-Big Rock 8, AFC 2: The Raiders fell in a nonconference game.

AFC scored both of its runs in the third inning, a frame where Jordan Harris doubled and Evan Kopp contributed an RBI single.

Hinckley-Big Rock touched AFC starter Braiden Runkle for four runs in the first. Harris and Mason Munroe each pitched in relief and each struck out four.

Softball

Amboy 10, Polo 6: The Clippers avenged Tuesday’s loss to the Marcos with a home victory Friday afternoon.

Gabby Jones and Maeve Larson each had two hits for Amboy, which scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, three more in the third, then two in the sixth. Hannah Blanton allowed six runs and five hits, with three strikeouts and six walks.

Izzy Sellers and Natalie Nelson each had two hits for Polo, with Nelson ripping a double. Karlea Frey took the loss in the circle, as the Marcos’ rally from an 8-1 deficit after three innings fell short.

St. Bede 14, Fulton 4: The Steamers fell to the Bruins in a Three Rivers crossover in a game where St. Bede hit five home runs.

Anna Jacobs went 2-for-3 at the plate for Fulton.

Elizabeth Fish took the loss for Fulton, allowing 11 runs on nine hits and striking out three.

Boys tennis

Newman 5, Rochelle 4: The Comets eked out a win over the Hubs by taking all but one singles match.

Marvel Zhang won 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 1 singles. Logan Palmer won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. John Craft won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Griffin Moran won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Carson Palmer won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

MLB

Junis suffers loss vs. White Sox: Rock Falls native Jakob Junis started Game 2 of the Royals’ doubleheader Friday against the White Sox in Chicago, dropping to 1-3 on the season in Kansas City’s 3-1 loss.

Junis lasted just an inning and a third, allowing three runs (two earned) and four hits, striking out one without a walk. He threw 24 of his 37 pitches for strikes, and gave up a two-run home run to Andrew Vaughn in the second inning.

NBA

Roby starts again for Thunder: Dixon native Isaiah Roby made his sixth straight start Friday night as Oklahoma City lost to the visiting Utah Jazz.

Roby had six points, one rebound and one blocked shot in 22 minutes, shooting 3-for-8 from the field, including 0-for-1 from 3-point range.

The Thunder (21-50) are back in action hosting the Clippers at 8 p.m. Sunday.

THURSDAY’S LATE RESULTS

Girls soccer

Sterling 6, Rochelle 0: Ellie Gasso scored five goals, and the Golden Warriors blanked the Hubs in a nonconference match at Roscoe Eades Stadium on Thursday evening.

Hailey Walters scored the other goal and dished four assists, and Gasso assisted on Walters’ score. Jasmin Capilla notched the other assist for Sterling, and Jessica White made six saves in goal.

Wrestling

Comets swept at home: Newman lost a pair of duals, falling to Fulton 35-19 and Oregon 46-15. The Hawks defeated Fulton 42-30 in the third dual.

Will Rude (138) notched a pair of first-period pins for the Comets, and Carter Rude (126/132) won by decision twice. Brayden Porter (145) added a major decision against Fulton. Brady Grennan (120) and Cameron Dugger (170) both won by decision against Oregon.

The Hawks’ contested wins against Newman came from Dalton McCammon (tech fall at 145), Andrew Herbst (tech fall at 152), Sebastian Cardenas (pin at 160) and Adam Glendenning (pin at 220). Against Fulton, Oregon got wins from Grant Stender (pin at 126), Jared Glendenning (pin at 138) and Ethan George (pin at 170).

Fulton’s Kaleb Schipper (220) won a pair of pins, and Ethan Rash (182) won by pin and decision. Ryan Snyder (170) took a major decision against Newman, while Noah Ford (152), Zane Pannell (195) and Nate Portz (285) all won by pin against Oregon.
