DIXON – The Dixon Public Schools Foundation is gearing up for its annual 2024 Stupor Bowl, a competitive community trivia contest supporting local education.
The event will begin with morning rounds taking place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Reagan Middle School cafeteria, 620 Division St., Dixon. The top four teams will continue to the playoffs at 1:30 p.m.
The event costs $150 per team for nonprofits and families and $300 per team for businesses. All proceeds will go to support the Dixon Schools Foundation, which already has donated more than $50,000 in classroom grants to area schools. The event also will feature a silent auction, with bidding on a variety of items throughout the day.
Teams
Teams can have up to 10 players, with six players competing at a time during the first four rounds. Once a team advances to the playoffs, it will be reduced to only five players, with one designated as the team captain. Players only can compete on one team per day.
Rounds and gameplay
In rounds one through four, teams will have 60 seconds to answer each question. During the playoffs, the game is no longer timed, but moderators will call a two-minute timeout at halftime. Teams can substitute players at halftime or during timeouts, and each team is allowed one 60-second timeout per half.
Scoring
During rounds one through four:
- Teams answer 20 questions per round, each worth two points.
- Players will be asked one “Stupor Duper Question” per round worth four points.
- Teams can buy Stupor Chips to add a 21st question and Stupor Dots to add two possible answers to a question.
After the first four rounds, the four teams with the highest scores will advance to the playoffs. A tie-breaker question will be provided if necessary.
Playoffs
Playoff rounds will consist of four quarters with 24 questions, including six toss-up questions worth 10 points each and six teamwork questions worth 20 points each. A tie-breaker toss-up question will decide the winner in the event that the final score is tied.
Players will have 10 seconds to answer toss-up questions after they have been read and 30 seconds for math questions. If players buzz in too early and answer incorrectly, the other team will have a chance to answer.
The team that is trailing at the end of each quarter will control the first teamwork question of the following quarter. Teams are allowed up to 30 seconds to answer teamwork questions.
Team members may only talk during the 30 seconds for question discussion, and penalties will be given for any additional talking.
Participants are not allowed to use cellphones, smart devices or calculators, and all concerns must be voiced by the team captain before the next question. The moderator has the final say in all disputes.
To compete, participants must submit their online entry form, available at www.dps170.org. The deadline to submit the entry form is Tuesday, Feb. 4.
