High school sports roundup for Monday, April 19: Benet volleyball advances to ESCC championship match

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Benet d. Nazareth 25-11, 25-15

Kyla Kenney had six kills and two digs, Daria Rodriguez eight kills and Rachel Muisenga 26 assists and 13 digs for Benet (9-0, 7-0 East Suburban Catholic Conference), which advanced to play Marist at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the East Suburban Catholic Conference Tournament championship match. Ann Marie Remmes added three kills and three blocks and Jaci Budrek nine digs for the Redwings.

IC Catholic Prep d. Harvest Christian 25-6, 25-15

Sophie Hurt had 10 assists, five digs and three aces, Jess Sobon 10 kills, three digs and three aces and Kristen Brachmann two kills and three digs for the Knights (15-0). Maddi Benson added four digs, Morgan Benson two aces and Ava Falduto four kills.

Montini d. Loyola 25-22, 25-23

Maddie Kassalis had seven kills, five aces and two blocks, Jordan Heatherly 15 assists and 12 digs and Paige Pickering 10 kills and seven digs for the Lady Broncos. Reeghan Boyer added 21 digs and Haley Goetz six assists and three digs.

BASEBALL

Nazareth 7, Buffalo Grove 6

The Roadrunners (5-0) remained unbeaten, winning on a walk-off wild pitch in the seventh. Justin Gutierrez led the offense going 3-3 with a RBI. Ryan Smith was 2-3 with a run and RBI. Lucas Smith was 2-3 with three runs scored.

Wheaton Academy 7, Aurora Central Catholic 1

Shane Baumgarten struck out 10 over 5.1 strong innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. Ryan Skala went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Andy Roman 2-for-3 with an RBI and Josh Cosme 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Wheaton Academy.

Lyons 14, Glenbard West 3

Ryan Kudia came an out away from a five-inning no-hitter, striking out six, and Harrison Kowalski, Troy Stukenberg, Kudia and Bo Karlson all had multi-hit games for the Lions (4-0). Cooper Ohlson had three RBIs.

Timothy Christian 16, Westmont 1

Robby Singer went 2-for-2 with a double and Lucas Hicks had a stolen base and scored a run for the Sentinels (0-6, 0-1 Metro Suburban Red). Losing pitcher Caleb Kleinz struck out four.

SOFTBALL

Lemont 15, Sandburg 0

Frankie Rita hit a grand slam and drove in six runs and Sage Mardjetko struck out 12 in five one-hit innings for the Indians (1-2). Emma Kucharski went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Mardjetko 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

GIRLS SOCCER

Benet 2, Naperville Central 1

Jaimee Cibulka scored an unassisted goal and Mariana Pinto a goal on an assist from Rachel Burns, the second coming with 5:51 left, as the Redwings scored twice in the second half to rally to a season-opening win. Shannon Clark had nine saves in goal for Benet.
