Wrestling: IC Catholic Prep sends four to Class 1A state semifinals; Downers South has three in 3A quarterfinals

IC Catholic Prep’s Nick Renteria, Michael Calcagno, Jadon Mims and Isaiah Gonzalez and Nazareth’s Gabe Kaminski advanced to the Class 1A semifinals at the IHSA state meet on Thursday in Champaign,

In Class 1A, Renteria at 120 won matches by technical fall over Harvest Christian’s Zeke Schroeder and Ridgeview’s Braydon Campbell. Calcagno at 182 pinned Stillman Valley’s Andrew Forcier, and then won a 7-1 decision over Westville’s Rylee Edwards. Mims at 220 won by technical fall over Wood River’s Drake Champlin and won a 14-10 decision over Dixon’s Justin Dallas. Gonzalez at heavyweight won a 4-1 decision over Carmi’s Titus Wood and an 8-0 major decision over Polo’s Daniel Engel. Nazareth’s Gabe Kaminski at 220 won a 14-5 major decision over Unity’s Oran Vareja and won his second match by DQ.

In Class 2A, Montini’s Jayden Colon at 145 pinned Civic Memorial’s Ben Skaggs and won a 4-1 decision over Aurora Christian’s Taythan Silva. At 152 Montini’s David Mayora won a 4-3 decision over Dunlap’s Nick Mueller and pinned East St. Louis’ Cody Powell.

Lemont’s Alex Tagler at 170 pinned St. Patrick’s Gio Hernandez and won a 9-3 decision over Mahomet’s Brennan Houser. At 182 Lemont’s pinned Jacksonville’s Luca Thies and won a 5-2 decision over Lake Forest’s Charlie Heydorn.

Fenwick’s Conor Paris at 182 won an 8-4 decision over Brother Rice’s Colin Ashley and a 5-2 decision over Joliet Catholic’s Caden Moore. Fenwick’s Jimmy Liston at heavyweight pinned Aurora Christian’s Braden Hunter and won a 2-1 decision over Raymond Begay.

In Class 3A, York’s Sean Berger at 120 advanced to the quarterfinals with a 13-7 decision over Oak Park’s Jalen Dunson. Also advancing to the quarterfinals was Downers Grove South’s Luke Swan at 132 with a pin of Fremd’s Maddux Khalimsky, Hinsdale Central’s Cody Tavoso at 132 with a 13-0 major decision over Belvidere North’s Kamryn Labeau, Downers Grove South’s Jimmy Nugent at 138 with a pin of Minook’s Elijah Munoz, Glenbard West’s Brennan Skoda at 152 with a 10-7 win over Yorkville’s Luke Zook, Downers Grove South’s Will Schuessler with a 7-0 decision over Jacobs’ Joey Scrivani, Hinsdale Central’s Marko Ivanisevic with a 9-3 decision over Mundelein’s Henri Ortiz and Downers Grove North’s Jordan Lewis at 220.
