Letter: Culturally responsive teaching should be welcomed in our schools

To the Editor:

The Social Justice Team of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva strongly supports the St. Charles school district’s plan to deliver culturally responsive teaching. This focus respects diversity and recognizes that students have unique needs. Educators who consider individual differences of students from various cultures can do a more effective job of meeting their educational needs. This will cause students to be more engaged in their learning.

Educating students in a way that is equitable means addressing factors that have created achievement differences within our society. Helping all of our students achieve to their potential will reflect well on our schools and will ensure that their graduates make meaningful contributions to our society.

Living through COVID-19 has been stressful for everyone in our community. Participating on the school board and mediating the many different desires and concerns is difficult in the best of times. We offer a special thank you to the board for their dedication and concern.
