Batavia United Way challenges public to join 21-week equity challenge

BATAVIA – Batavia United Way is encouraging residents to join a 21-week program featuring racial equity activities to learn more about systemic racism and inequity.

According to a news release, the program is meant to show the impact of systemic racism and inequity in local communities.

“The Batavia community is full of allies and individuals who want to help. One of the first steps to bringing about action is getting a better understanding of the issues at hand. Batavia United Way is very excited to participate in this unique opportunity to educate and encourage meaningful conversations on equity and racism, and we hope others consider joining us to do so,” stated Bonnie Baumgartner, executive director of Batavia United Way.

The 21-Week Equity Challenge is a free program that runs through June 19. Participants are asked to spend 15 minutes each week learning more about building a more equitable community through readings, videos and questions that provoke conversations, the release stated. Participants are then encouraged to have racial equity conversations with family, friends and co-workers.

“I believe education and communication are key components in creating a more inclusive and just society. That is why I have signed up for and am encouraging Batavia CDI members to participate in the United Way of Illinois 21-week Equity Challenge. I look forward to partnering with our local Batavia United Way to begin these important conversations in our community,” stated Chris Lowe, president of the Batavia Community Diversity Initiative.
