Sleeping man parked in Sugar Grove driveway charged with DUI

Motorist insisted he lived there – but he didn’t

SUGAR GROVE – An Aurora man was charged with driving under the influence after police found him asleep in the driver’s seat while parked in a resident’s driveway, according to police reports.

Braulio M. Ruiz, 51, of the 800 block of High Street, Aurora, was charged Aug. 14 with driving under the influence and stopping or standing in a prohibited place.

A resident of the 200 block of Goldenrod Drive called police shortly before 1:30 a.m. to report a white Nissan was in his driveway with a man passed out inside of it.

Police observed the vehicle parked at a slight angle with its rear tires on the sidewalk, the report stated.

The driver, later identified as Ruiz, was asleep in the driver’s seat with the keys in the center console area of the car, the report stated.

After waking Ruiz, police “observed Ruiz’s eyes to be very red, bloodshot and glassy,” the report stated. “Ruiz told me that he had urinated on himself due to being scared. … While Ruiz was outside of the vehicle, I was overcome by a strong and profound odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and person. Ruiz’s speech was slurred and slow when he spoke to me.”

When an officer asked Ruiz where he lived, he said, “‘Right here’ and indicated over toward the residence,” the report stated.

Ruiz told police he drove there from a friend’s house in Aurora and that he had one Bud Lite beer – a small one, the report stated.

Ruiz did not complete field sobriety tests and later refused a Breathalyzer test at the police station, the report stated.

Court and bond information were not available.
