Schaumburg man charged with bringing Xanax into Kane County jail

Search revealed pills hidden near his groin

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Schaumburg man who was taken into custody at the Kane County jail for a domestic battery was later charged with felony possession of a controlled substance – Xanax – and for bringing it into the jail by hiding it near his groin, according to Kane County Sheriff’s reports and court records.

Jerod D. Carpenter, 28, of the 300 block of Bayview Point, Schaumburg, was also charged May 1 with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery, records show.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 200 block of North Main Street, Burlington shortly before 1 a.m. that day for a domestic complaint, the report stated.

The victim told deputies that Carpenter had physically grabbed her and scratched her when they argued about him being on drugs or marijuana while in her house, the report stated.

Carpenter denied that their argument had become physical; he allowed deputies to search him and his backpack and they found a small amount of marijuana, the report stated.

Carpenter said he had a medical card that allowed him to possess the marijuana, the report stated.

Meanwhile, the victim was being treated in an ambulance for red marks and scratches on the right side of her neck, the report stated.

The victim told deputies that she found pills in a bag that she believed were Carpenter’s and they argued; she told him he had to leave if he was going to do drugs, the report stated.

“Jerold told (her) that he would leave the house but only if she gave him his pills back,” the report stated. “In an attempt to get his pills back, had pulled (her) and grabbed and scratched her neck as she was trying to walk away. (She) was able to get away and call 911. That was when Jerod fled the scene.”

Deputies told Carpenter he could not bring his marijuana or paraphernalia into the jail, or any other drugs while going through booking; Carpenter told deputies he did not have anything else, the report stated.

Later, corrections officers notified the deputies that they found 44 green pills and 12 white pills hidden on Carpenter’s body near his groin, the report stated.

According to the charging documents, the controlled substance Carpenter brought into the jail was Xanax.

Bringing them into the jail is a Class 2 felony punishable by four to seven years in prison and fines up to $25,000, or up to 48 months of probation, if convicted.

Carpenter was also charged with possessing approximately 21 grams of a substance containing Xanax, a Class 4 felony, according to the charging documents, punishable by one to three years in prison and fines up to $25,000, if convicted.

Xanax is in a class of drug called benzodiazepines, which are depressants used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration website, dea.gov.

Carpenter was released on a personal recognizance bond and ordered not to have contact with the victim, nor to have entry at the Burlington address, according to court records.

Carpenter is scheduled to appear in court May 27.
