Randy returns! Hall turns to former coach Tieman, as next head coach

SPRING VALLEY – After two years away from the game, Randy Tieman will be returning to the sidelines as the Hall Red Devils varsity football coach.

Tieman stepped away as the Hall coach for personal reasons after leading the Red Devils to a 7-4 record and a second-round appearance in the 3A playoffs in 2019.

He said the timing is right to return and he missed the game.

“I talked to my grandkids and they were all for it. We’ll find out how well I missed it,” he joked.

Tieman said he “hardly missed” football during the 2021 spring COVID-19 season. However, when the regular football season returned in the fall under the Friday night lights, he began to get the itch. He could be seen at Hall home games sitting in the visitors bleachers and made it to couple away games.

“Last year was a little tougher sitting there watching it,” he said.

He said he especially missed being with the kids and all the camaraderie.

Tieman succeeds Nick Guerrini, who stepped down after two seasons as head coach, citing work conflicts due to receiving a promotion to assistant general manager at the Walmart Distribution Center.

Guerrini led the Red Devils to a 1-4 record in the spring 2021 season and a 1-8 mark last fall.

Tieman, who is a router at Double D, met with the Hall kids last week “about the weight room and what his expectations were and what we need to get done from now until we get into camp in July and practices in August.”

“Seems to be a pretty good core of kids and hopefully we can add on trying to get some other kids and recruit the hallways and see if we can get anybody to step in and go from there,” he said.

In his first stint, Tieman posted a 45-39 record in eight seasons from 2012-19. As the 2017 BCR Football Coach of the Year, Tieman guided the Red Devils to their first conference championship in 10 years, going 6-0 in the TRAC Mississippi division.

The Red Devils made the playoffs six of his last seven seasons while compiling a 44-32 mark, including a 6-6 postseason record.

It was 10 years ago when Tieman started his first stint as Hall varsity coach. He had a two-year run of 17-1 at the sophomore level as the Red Demons coach and had been involved with youth football before that.
