Cary-Grove senior Wade Abrams thought he just had a thigh bruise back on Oct. 20, as he had at other points this season. It was much worse and put his season in doubt before he eventually worked his way back to play a huge role in the Trojans' 37-36 Class 6A state championship win.
Cary-Grove's goal of winning the Class 6A state title never wavered, even when powerhouse East St. Louis was placed in 6A. The Trojans stayed the course and completed their mission with a 37-36 victory on Saturday. They celebrated their title on Sunday back home.
East St. Louis wide receiver Luther Burden had six catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns and an 80-yard kickoff return for a score in the Flyers' 37-36 loss to Cary-Grove in the Class 6A state championship game.
