Jacobs puts everything together for big win over Burlington Central

Jacobs' Ben Ludlum

ALGONQUIN – Jacobs excelled in all phases of the game to take down Burlington Central, 54-14, in their Fox Valley Conference football game Friday night.

The Golden Eagles started with the opening kickoff, which Ben Ludlum took 95 yards for a touchdown only 13 seconds into the game.

“We had great blocking on that play,” Ludlum said. “It was wide open.”

Jacobs coach Brian Zimmerman figures the Eagles’ kickoff return team was due for a touchdown.

“We have a good KOR (kickoff return) team,” Zimmerman said. “Ben has 10.9 100 speed so we thought we could break one. It was a matter of time. It set the tone and gave us great momentum early.”

Ludlum also played a huge part in the Golden Eagles offense with eight carries for 104 yards and three touchdown runs of 1, 20 and 19 yards.

Senior running back Nasir Canty rushed 11 times for 113 yards on and scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards.

“The offensive line was awesome,” Canty said. “They opened some huge holes. The O-line was getting good push.”

Junior quarterback Max Benner completed 3 of 4 passes for 86 yards including a 7-yard scoring pass to Grant Stec, who caught two passes for 72 yards. Nick True caught a pass for 14 yards.

“I like our passing game, but we have two great backs and we can kill time off the clock,” Zimmerman said. “I am proud of the way we played.”

Junior cornerback Ashton Niehaus provided the big play on defense for the Golden Eagles (4-2, 4- FVC). Niehaus, who had two interceptions in the game, picked off a pass and raced 62 yards for a touchdown with 4:31 left in the first quarter. His second interception came late in the second quarter.

“We had switched defenses and I just read it right and was able to get able to get a pick-six,” Niehaus said. “On the second interception, the ball was up in the air on a hitch route and I was able to get the ball. Ben set the tone for the game with the opening kickoff touchdown.”

The Rockets (2-4, 2-4) got their touchdowns from Gavin Sarvis on a 19-yard run and Joey Kowall on a 7-yard run.
