Friday Roundup: Fieldcrest, Sandwich remain winless after Week 5 defeats

At LeRoy, the Fieldcrest football team scored first, but it was host LeRoy that scored most in a 34-18 victory in a Heart of Illinois Conference crossover Friday night.

Fieldcrest opened the night’s scoring with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Koltin Kearfott to Landon Modro, and the Knights trailed only 20-18 at halftime before being outscored 14-0 in the second half to fall to 0-5.

Kearfott finished 14-of-30 passing for 272 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. His top receivers included Modro (five receptions for 74 yards), Logan Halley (four catches, 116 yards) and Jozia Johnson (three receptions, 54 yards).

The Knights were held to minus-26 yards rushing by LeRoy (2-3).

Richmond-Burton 55, Sandwich 6: At Richmond, the visiting Indians fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Kishwaukee River/Interstate 8 Blue with the loss in their first on-field action since Week 2.

Iroquois West 32, Seneca 20: At Seneca, the Fighting Irish held a 14-13 advantage going into halftime, but fell flat throughout the final 24 minutes as the Raiders dominated time of possession (17:01 to 6:59) posting three scores in the Vermillion Valley Football Alliance North opener.

The Irish (1-4, 0-1 VVFAN) could muster only 73 yards of offense and three first downs in the second half for a game total of 213 yards in offensive productivity.

Meanwhile, Iroquois West (4-1, 1-0) racked up 293 yards of offense, mostly off the legs of junior running back Trystyn Schacht, who toted the ball 32 times for 220 yards and a pair of scores, including 20 carries and 118 yards of rushing during the Raiders’ impressive ball-control second half.

Senior running back Brock Moore led the Irish with nine carries and 73 yards rushing along with 54 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns – one by ground and another by air – from sophomore quarterback Nathan Grant (five completions, 86 yards).

Ottawa 13, Woodstock North 6: At Woodstock, the Corsairs’ defense recorded five fumbles – including three by Gavin Freeman – in the victory. Colby Mortenson (24-yard run) and Keevon Peterson (69-yard run) scored Ottawa’s touchdowns, with Peterson finishing with 121 yards and Mortenson accumulating 51 yards passing.

Boys soccer

Somonauk 6, Sandwich 1: Johnathon Carlson made nine saves, and Alex Alfaro scored the lone goal for the Indians (0-15-1) in the nonconference loss.

Girls volleyball

Newark def. Serena, 25-19, 19-25, 25-16: In Little Ten play, the Norsemen (15-5, 6-1) were led to victory by Kelly Snyder’s 10 kills and eight digs, Lauren Ulrich’s 30 assists, and 10 digs from Taylor Kruser.
