The second event celebrated those earning transfer associate degrees in science, engineering science or fine arts.

All told, students earned degrees or certificates from 109 different programs, with the largest being the arts, science and engineering science associate degrees along with AAS in registered nursing and certificates for nursing assistant, emergency medical technician and firefighter, the college said in a news release.

Several new programs also saw their first class of graduates, including iOS development certificate with integrated AI, Android with integrated AI certificate, introduction to graphic design certificate and Python certificate.

Days before the two graduations, more than 30 nursing graduates were also recognized at a pinning ceremony, where they were symbolically welcomed into the profession by nurse faculty.

MCC also recognized 79 high school students graduating from the Dual Degree program, meaning they earned both a high school diploma and an associate degree at the same time. Those included 20 students from Huntley, 23 from Woodstock North, 17 from Woodstock and 19 from Harvard.

Among the hundreds of graduates, 208 earned honors or high honors with a GPA of 3.5 or greater, the college said.

“We have the privilege of witnessing so many inspiring stories of transformation,” MCC President Clint Gabbard said in the release. “Our graduates have demonstrated extraordinary perseverance. Many balanced work, family responsibilities, or financial challenges; some pursued one career path before needing to switch to another – so many people starting, stopping, and finding a way to start again. In choosing to complete this journey, they’ve proven to themselves how capable they are, and they leave MCC better prepared to make a difference in their communities and careers.”

Kevin Riley and Molly Stockwell were the student speakers at their respectively ceremonies.

“When you get an opportunity, take it, make it work for you, and run as far as you can with it,” Riley said in his commencement address. “Just being willing opens doors in life. Even when the world is a hard place, we carry everything we need to face it.”

Stockwell reflected on the personal growth students experienced at MCC, saying: “Here, you are writing your own story and making your own direction. There are people here who guide you along the way, but ultimately you are the director. As we walk across this stage today and receive our degrees, we’re not just closing a chapter; we’re stepping into the next act with the confidence to write whatever comes next.”

McHenry County College recognized 913 graduates at its Spring 2026 commencement on May 16, 2026, at the Crystal Lake campus.

Rock Falls, Fulton students make Loras College spring dean’s list

Shaw Local News Network

To be eligible, a student must earn a minimum grade-point average of 3.50 for the term and be a full-time student taking at least 12 graded credits.

The following area undergraduate students, Daken J. Belvidere Road.

The Children’s Health and Safety Fair is open to families with children of all ages and is offered at no cost.

A community favorite since its start in 2004, the fair features hands-on activities designed to help children learn important health and safety lessons through interactive and educational exhibits.

“The Children’s Health and Safety Fair is a valued tradition that brings our community together in a meaningful way each year,” said Karen Mahnke, vice president of operations and Bernthal chief nurse executive at Northwestern Medicine Catherine Gratz Griffin Lake Forest Hospital. “We love welcoming families into the Outpatient Center and seeing children have fun while learning important health and safety lessons. Hawley St. offers year-round programs designed specifically for children ages 18 months through 9 years — and parents in Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Libertyville, Round Lake, Grayslake, Waukegan, and surrounding communities are responding faster than the owners expected.

“We opened on April 24th, and we have been honestly shocked at how warmly Lake County families have welcomed us,” said John Darino, who owns and operates the Mundelein location with his wife, Lauren. “We saw what this program did for our own kids, and we wanted to bring that experience to families in this community. The response in the first few weeks tells us we made the right bet.”

One trial class in particular crystallized for the Darino’s exactly why they brought KidsUnited to Lake County. A local mother brought her son in to try a class. She told the team that he had struggled in past team-sports environments because he felt overwhelmed and lost in the crowd. Within minutes, in KidsUnited’s small-class format with two coaches actively engaged with every child, he was thriving.

“Watching that mom’s face light up as she saw her son doing well — laughing, participating, holding his own — that is exactly what makes this work,” John Darino said in a news release. “Every child is on their own development journey, at their own pace. With no more than 12 children per class and two coaches on the field every session, that kind of attention is structural. It is not a marketing claim. It is how the program is designed.”

Unlike traditional youth sports programs, KidsUnited was built from the start around early childhood development principles. The curriculum was designed by child development specialists to teach far more than the sport. Children develop body mastery, teamwork, decision-making, communication, and self-confidence — using soccer as the engaging, age-appropriate context.

Three structural elements distinguish KidsUnited from typical youth sports offerings:

• Small classes, intentional ratios. Maximum 12 children per class with two coaches on the field, every session.

• Year-round, indoor, weather-proof. Programs run 52 weeks a year on a state-of-the-art indoor turf field. No cancellations for rain, heat, cold, or short winter days. Children get continuous progression, week after week.

• Personalized progress, communicated to parents. Coaches provide feedback to parents after every class. Formal child-development assessments are conducted every 13 weeks so parents can see exactly how their child is growing across motor skills, social engagement, and confidence.

“What we love most is watching the kids show up engaged and present,” said Lauren Darino, co-owner. “It is genuinely getting harder to pull young children away from screens. To walk into the club and see kids in motion — laughing, problem-solving together, learning to take turns and cheer each other on — that is exactly what childhood should look like. Every parent we talk to feels the same way. They are looking for something that pulls their kids back into the real world, not another scheduled screen activity.”

Parents interested in experiencing the program firsthand can book a complimentary trial class for their child. To schedule, parents can call 847-260-7101 or email mundelein@kidsunited.com.

For information, visit KidsUnited.com.

The curriculum was designed by child development specialists to teach far more than the sport. The format allows America itself to speak through time through taverns, battlefields, immigrant ships, convention halls, front porches, factories, classrooms, churches and family kitchens.”

Written, directed and produced by Stuart, the production brings to life a sweeping tapestry of American voices alongside many of America’s founders, statesmen, immigrants, workers, soldiers, teachers, parents and ordinary citizens whose lives collectively shaped the nation’s improbable and enduring story.

Performed by a 10-person ensemble portraying dozens of characters, the production features vintage-inspired radio theater staging, live sound effects, atmospheric period music, ensemble vocal work and rapid character transitions in the grand tradition of classic American radio broadcasts.

Among the performers is veteran Improv Playhouse actor Renee Johnson, who portrays several characters throughout the production, including celebrated poet Phillis Wheatley.

“When David invited me to be part of ‘Voices of Liberty,’ I immediately felt both excited and humbled,” Johnson said. “To portray Phillis Wheatley, a woman whose words and accomplishments transcended extraordinary barriers, is a tremendous honor. This production reminds us that the American story belongs to many voices, and I’m grateful to help bring some of those voices to life.”

Also featured is actor Redelle Lawrence, a familiar face to audiences of Improv Playhouse’s annual “Last Supper Chronicles” productions. Lawrence portrays several historical figures, including Crispus Attucks and Frederick Douglass.

The production has continued expanding throughout rehearsals, recently adding a new Frederick Douglass scene, additional immigrant storylines, and a multigenerational family thread that grounds the production’s historical sweep in one fictional American family’s journey across generations.

“Voices of Liberty” is recommended for families, couples, students, history enthusiasts, veterans, educators, and audiences of all generations.

The New Improv Playhouse Theater is located at 130 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville.

“Voices of Liberty” runs 60 to 70 minutes with no intermission. Groups are welcome.

Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. June 12 and 19, and at 7 p.m. June 13 and 20.

Tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $15 for students. Group and family pack rates are available. Please note that it is cash only at the door.

For information or to buy tickets, visit improvplayhouse.com or call 847-968-4529.

Lake County Retired Teachers Association to meet

Shaw Local News Network

The Lake County Retired Teachers Association will meet at noon June 9 at Lambs Farm Magnolia Cafe and Bakery in Libertyville, located at the junction of Route 176 and Interstate 94.

The Lake County Retired Teachers Association will meet at noon June 9 at Lambs Farm Magnolia Cafe and Bakery in Libertyville, located at the junction of Route 176 and Interstate 94.

The cost is $18 a person.
