GLEN ELLYN – Three may be the magic number, but four was a key numeral for Glenbard South’s softball team.
The Raiders scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning of a 10-5 win against Fenton on April 24.
Bailee Flanagan doubled and scored when Jocelyn Leerschen sacrificed and reached on an error. Leerschen, Daniella Little and Amaya Coval, whose double scored Little, added runs in the frame to help secure the win.
Leerschen and Little each drove in three runs and scored twice. Flanagan scored three times, Coval drove in two, and Elizabeth Cizek hit a solo home run for the Raiders.
BASEBALL
Glenbard South
Billy Powers beat the throw home on Kyle Zygadto’s single, and John McMahon later scored on Dan Opem’s fly ball in the top of the sixth for insurance runs in the Raiders’ 7-3 win against Wheaton Academy on April 24.
Zygadto also drove in two runs in the fourth as South scored three times to take the lead for good. Opem drove in two runs, McMahon scored three times, and Powers scored twice. Christian Dupuis pitched a complete game for the win.
Glenbard West
The Hilltoppers snapped a four-game skid with an 8-2 win against Addison Trail on April 22.
West pounded out 14 hits total and took the lead for good with six runs in the bottom of the third. Grant Lalla hit a two-run double, Cole Brady hit a double to score Lalla, and Joey Gavac and David Dillman added RBIs in the inning.
Lalla had three hits and two RBIs while DJ Ficarella, Sam Kaske, Ryan Petersen and Kyle Engstrom had two hits each. Kolin Kennebeck pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win.
St. Francis
Nolan Pechan hit a three-run double and Tommy Mayor also drove in a run, but the Spartans fell 14-4 against Marmion on April 24.
Wheaton North
After falling in the first game of a DuPage Valley Conference series against Metea Valley, the Falcons rallied to take the three-game set.
Erik Mueller hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh that scored Connor Olson and Tyler Woltman in a 6-4 win April 22. North scored once in the third and three times in the fourth after Metea went ahead 3-0. Jackson Pastore allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief for the win. Woltman’s grounder scored John Carlson with the winning run in a 3-2 victory at North on April 21. Jackson Gray pitched all seven innings for the win.
Wheaton Warrenville South
Griffen Pschigoda doubled and drove in a run, Brad Novak had an RBI, and Ryan Simak and Matt Scherrman each scored one, but the Tigers fell 3-2 against Neuqua Valley on April 22.
SOFTBALL
Glenbard West
Katherine Porter belted a three-run home run that scored Jessica Bongiorno and Angela Flamini, but the Hilltoppers couldn’t overcome Lyons Township’s six-run first inning in a 9-3 loss April 24.
Wheaton North
Amanda Moravek doubled, drove in a run and scored in the Falcons’ 4-1 win against Neuqua Valley on April 24.
Lily Oviatt and Emma Fieweger each drove in a run while Alleigha Burau, Jamie Smith and Hannah Burden each scored. Sarah Gorzak pitched seven innings for the win.
BOYS GYMNASTICS
Glenbard West
The Hilltoppers crowned four event champions and took home the team title with a 158.10 score at their own Steve Kafka invite April 22.
Matthew Ideler (9.0) led a 1-2-3 finish for West on high bar, with Timmy Le (8.9) and Alexander Demeris (8.6) behind him.
Ideler tied for top honors on vault (9.1), with Aiden Rudolph (9.0) and Le (8.9) taking third and fourth, respectively.
Frankie Pham won rings (9.4), and Le tied for first on floor (9.5). Rudolph tied for third on floor (9.4).
Wheaton co-op
Five event champs and the all-around winner helped propel Wheaton to the title at the DuPage Valley Conference meet April 21.
Austin Tate was the all-around winner (51.350) and took home event titles on pommel horse (8.75), rings (8.35), parallel bars (8.9) and horizontal bar (8.45).
Aiden Moran and teammate Chris Wiper tied for the floor title (9.10). Joey DiRienzo was the runner-up on horizontal bar (8.35), parallel bars (8.85) and pommel horse (8.7), finishing just ahead of teammate Andy Mathieu (8.5) on pommel horse.
BOYS TENNIS
Glenbard West
A title at No. 1 singles and two doubles titles propelled the Hilltoppers to the crown at the St. Charles East invite April 22.
Christopher Maltby won the No. 1 singles title for West. Alex Kernagis and Griffin Foster teamed up for the win at No. 1 doubles, and Jack Thompson and Jack Mansfield won at No. 3 doubles. Hunter Silas and Kyle Keane finished third at No. 2 doubles.
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Glenbard West
Five event titles helped West finish atop the Group A standings with 84 points at the Wheaton Warrenville South invite April 21.
Vince Divenere won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.58 seconds (he was second in the 300 hurdles in 39.48), Cameron Benes won the 800 run in 1:57.36, and Ethan Larson cleared 6 feet, 3 inches to win high jump.
The 4x100 relay team of Joe Zydlo, Divenere, Tyquan Cox and Brady Heller won in 42.50, and the 4x200 quartet of Cox, Heller, Zydlo and Justice Bradley won in 1:30.38.
Wheaton North
North had five individual event champions at the York quad meet April 21. David Bradley won pole vault (14 feet, 2 inches), Chris Bucci won the 110-meter hurdles (15.8 seconds), Andrew Lauber won the 400 dash (50.5), Joey Simon took the 800 run (2:00.2), and Alexander Daigle won the 3,200 run in 10:23.8. The 4x400 relay also won in 3:26.3.
Wheaton Warrenville South
The Tigers had three Class A event champs at their own Red Grange Classic April 21. Sean Maison won the 3,200-meter run in 9:28.56, Tom Ansiel won pole vault (14 feet, 7 inches), and the 4x400 relay team of Baye Cooper, Trent Schweitzer, Nate Guerreiro and Joe Zubak took the title in 3:27.40.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Glenbard South
Running against Class 3A schools, the Class 2A Raiders had several strong showings at the Glenbard East invite April 21.
Katie King (12:41.78) and Julia Clingen (13:05.49) had a 1-2 finish in the 3,200-meter run, and Grayson Breen won discus (115 feet, 1 inch).
Abby Schlenker (2:28.12 in the 800 run), Courtney Knight (5:48.93 in the 1,600 run), Emma Taylor (17.59 in the 100 hurdles), Krista Kreshpanji (51.98 in the 300 hurdles), and the 4x200 relay team of Maiya Todd, Ania Gniatczyk, Joslynn Hibbler and Shellaney Smith (1:53.92) placed third.
Glenbard West
Katelynne Hart won all three distance events at West’s Sue Pariseau invite April 22, and the Hilltoppers finished fourth as a team.
Hart won the 800-meter run in 2:14.20, the 1,600 run in 4:50.72 and the 3,200 run in 10:25.95.
