Genealogical Society meeting

KEWANEE — The Henry County Genealogical Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at the Kewanee Public Library Second Floor meeting room. An elevator is available at the First Street entrance. Maryan Wherry will present a program about Warner Castle, which is located north of Orion. The castle was built by Wilder W. Warner in 1895 who had a passion for castles.

Support the troops

LADD — Heart of Illinois Blue Star Mothers will have a fundraiser from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Rip’s in Ladd. The ticket price is $8. There will be a bake sale, 50/50 drawing and a raffle. Carryouts will be available. Blue Star Mothers is a national organization. Members have children who are serving or have served in the military. All money raised goes to sending packages to the deployed troops.

Illinois Valley Toastmasters

PERU —± The Illinois Valley Toastmasters will start you on your path to being a proficient speaker and dynamic leader at its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at 1305 Sixth St., Peru. Members will practice short speeches and evaluate their work. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice speaking in response to off-the-cuff topics. Guests are always welcome!

Meetings are the first and third Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 1305 Sixth St., Peru (IVCH building east of St. Mary’s Catholic Church; parking available in lot on Seventh Street). Covered Bridge Quilters to meet

PRINCETON — The Covered Bridge Quilters will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 24 N. Main St., Princeton. Event-goers should enter through the front door just off of Main Street. The scheduled program is Raw Edge Applique, “Wall Art Quilts,” and Quilt Market Updates with Lisa Furleigh of Quilting in the Valley. Guests are welcome for a fee of $5.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, there will be a Raw Edge Applique workshop taught by Lisa Furleigh. The fee is $25 for non-members. For membership information, contact Claudia Mikyska at 815-224-2457.

Free concert at IVCC

OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Wind Ensemble, directed by Gene Montgomery, will offer a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the IVCC Cultural Centre. Selections to be performed include the music of Monterde, Jager, Benscriscutto, Morricone, Marquina, Nestico, Anderson, Benjamin and Broadway tunes from 1934 through 1959. The ensemble includes IVCC students, local and regional music educators and community members dedicated to the promotion of quality wind and percussion music. In addition to on-campus concerts, the ensemble also performs at community festivals and events and works with other universities and community bands in joint concerts.
