Joliet West co-op’s Carney, Red 6th in state

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – To round out his outstanding career, Joliet West Co-op’s Tom Carney decided to take his first shot at doubles in the boys tennis state tournament.

He talked with freshman Morgan Red about becoming partners.

They did, and when the state tournament concluded Saturday, it was evident the move was sound.

Carney and Morgan Red finished with an 8-2 record and claimed sixth place in a marathon trek through the state meet.

Their only losses were to Highland Park’s David Aizenberg-Max Gordon, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the third round of the championship bracket and to Hinsdale Central’s Lope Adelakun-Michael Czlonka, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (6) in a grueling fifth-place match.

Lemont’s Nick Urban and Nate Burner, who were top-seeded and finished second to Carney and Red in the Joliet West Sectional, won their first three matches at state but lost their fourth match and then fell in the sixth round of the consolation bracket.

Joliet West Sectional singles champion Jack Randall of Lockport reached the seventh round of the consolation bracket before being ousted. He finished the tournament 5-2.

JCA’s Jack Geissler and Lincoln-Way East’s Rohan Piska both lost their opening match, then won three rounds in the consolation bracket before being eliminated.
