John B. (Jack) Capps, 77, Forreston, died on Saturday May 31, 2014 due to a brief battle with cancer.
He was surrounded by family at his summer home in Merrimac, Wis.
He was born Jan. 3, 1937 in Freeport, the son of Milton and Mildred (Bruce) Capps.
He was employed by Barber Colman/Reed Chatwood in Rockford for 40 years before he retired.
Jack enjoyed following his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting, musical, and academic achievements.
He loved taking them fishing and golfing and playing practical jokes on them.
He was an avid Nascar race fan and attended many races at Daytona and throughout the country.
After retirement he took up golf and loved his winter home in Florida on the golf course.
He traveled to all 50 states with his wife of 56 years, Romaine (Schoonhoven) Capps.
Surviving are his wife, Romaine; son, Mark, Hartford, Wis.; two daughters, Jill (Norman) Folkerts, Union, Iowa, and Kay Capps Cross, Spring Grove, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Chase and Hunter Morgan, Madison, Wis., Tiffiny (Jesse) Smith,Rockford, Garrett, Addison and Elliott Cross, Spring Grove, Minn., Kaley Cross, Chicago, and Jonathon Capps, San Diego, Calif.; two step-grandchildren Joel (Jennifer) Folkerts and Brett Folkerts, Ames, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Leiya and Gavin Smith; and four step-great-grandchildren, Kylie Smith, Ayden, Cael, and Carson Folkerts; two nieces, Lynne (Erickson) Thiege and Tonya Erickson; and two nephews, Christopher (Flavia) and Matthew Erickson, Las Vegas, Nev.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Nancy (Capps) Erickson; and a nephew, William Erickson.
Cremation rites were performed at his request.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday June 10 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Forreston, with visitation prior to the service from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
A memorial gathering will also be held at his Wisconsin home, 746 Lake Wisconsin Drive, Merrimac, Wis., on Tuesday, June 24 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Arrangements were completed by Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston.
In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established according to Jack’s wishes.
