Varicose vein treatment options

Wondering if you should seek treatment for your varicose veins?

At Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, free screenings make it easy for clients to find out if they would benefit from non-surgical laser treatments to combat the condition.

Varicose vein disease can lead to many symptoms including swelling, aching, cramping, fatigue, heaviness, itching and burning. Additionally, those with varicose veins have an increased risk of blood clots.

“If an individual is having an issue with their legs the first step is to come in for the vein screening,” said Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna. “From there our ultrasound tech will do a quick scan to determine if there is a deeper issue with the veins. If there is, a full ultrasound will need to be scheduled.”

Following the full ultrasound, clients will see a physician to determine the best treatment plan to combat their vein disease. Eterna, which takes most insurances, will then submit the client’s clinical information to the insurance provider for prior authorization.

“Most insurance companies require you to wear compression stockings for a period of time before they will approve it,” Malinowski said. “But many do not.”

Once approved, Eterna can schedule treatments. Many of those treatment options can be done in-office under local anesthesia.

“The number of sessions all depends on the severity of the varicose veins,” Malinowski said. “After the laser, if there are spider veins that need to be cleaned up, sclerotherapy will be scheduled.”

While varicose veins tend to be swollen, raised above the surface of the skin, and dark in color, spider veins are generally smaller, red or blue in color, and closer to the surface of the skin.

“If in the beginning the free screening shows there isn’t a deeper issue and it is just spider veins, sessions can be scheduled,” Malinowski said. “Unfortunately, spider veins are considered a cosmetic treatment and they are not covered by insurance.”
