Becoming a Caregiver

When someone becomes a parent for the first time, you often hear they wish there was a manual. The same is true when you find yourself as a caregiver to a loved one. You may be put in this role with no education or training, but it is a big responsibility.

Joliet Area Community Hospice (JACH) understands how hard this new role may be for you and would like to offer some tips.

  • Knowing your loved one’s wishes is important since you may have to make decisions for them. Having this conversation is hard but necessary.
  • Organization is key. Have a notebook with pertinent information such as morning and bedtime routines, medication, contacts for healthcare professionals, and who to call in case of emergency.
  • Be sure the surroundings are safe: handrails to walk from room to room, raised toilet seat, nightlight, non-skid rugs, clear path for getting around with cane or wheelchair, guardrails bed and a monitor, cell phone or bell so they can contact you when needed.
  • Choose clothing that is comfortable, shoes that are easy to put on and off; know what food they are capable to eat easily.

As a caregiver you need to take time to care for yourself. Eat right, get enough exercise and sleep and take a break now and then. There are community services that can help too. You are not alone. JACH offers Virtual Caregiver Support Groups the first Thursday of every month at 3 p.m. To register email Rochelle at rwalwer@joliethospice.org.
