The future Wayfair fulfillment center in Romeoville was recently recognized as the “most significant lease transaction” at the Illinois Real Estate Journal Awards.

Earlier this year, the village announced the e-retailer’s plans to open a 1.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center, according to a news release. The future facility represents a $125 million investment in the community and the village said it expects the project to generate millions of dollars in taxable sales.

The village said the project will be one of the primary property tax generators in Romeoville.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized for the work that went into this lease agreement,” Romeoville Mayor John Noak said in a statement. “Our partnership with Wayfair is already off to a fantastic start and we are eager to officially welcome them to Romeoville.”

Noak recently noted the industrial sector makes up about 40% of the local school district’s property tax revenue.

Wayfair plans to hire for 250 full-time roles with peak employment expected to approach 500 jobs.

The company anticipates opening the facility in mid-2022.

Part of the project also includes the extension of Pinnacle Drive, connecting Renwick Road to Airport Road.
