Romeoville breaks ground on future dog park

The park will be split into two areas: one for large dogs, the other for small dogs

Romeoville officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site of a future dog park in the village in an open space along 135th Street last Friday.

The design for the future dog park includes an entry drive, 36 parking stalls and the dog park area itself, according to a news release. There will also be walkways, a shelter, furniture, fencing and lighting.

“A dog park has been one of the most requested amenities and we are pleased to be fulfilling that,” Romeoville Mayor John Noak said in a statement.

Noak also acknowledged State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, who he said was instrumental in securing a $300,000 grant for the construction of the park.

“So we owe a big thank you to her,” he said.

“Assisting the mayor and village trustees to make this project a reality has been a pleasure,” Manley said in a statement. “This new park enhances the warm and family-friendly atmosphere of Romeoville.”

The park will be split into two sections, a 4.8 acre area for large dogs and a 2.8 acre area for small dogs. Each section will include an agility course. The village said this is the first phase of the project. Practice fields will also be added.

The village acquired the land last year from the Diocese of Joliet.
