Chicago minister charged with sexual assault, abuse in Romeoville: cops

Investigation involved Romeoville, Chicago police

A man who was identified by Chicago police as a minister for a church in the city has been arrested on charges alleging he sexually assaulted and abused a minor in Romeoville, police said.

Anthony T. Coleman, 36, was taken to the Will County jail on Friday on charges of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He posted 10% of his $250,000 bond, and he was released from jail the same day.

The charges against Coleman stemmed from an investigation that began almost four years ago, according to Romeoville Police Chief Ken Kroll.

In September 2017, Romeoville police detectives were notified by Chicago police of a sexual abuse case they were investigating that involved a 33-year-old man and a 16-year-old female.

Chicago police informed Romeoville that their investigation involved “an inappropriate sexual relationship” taking place at a hotel in Chicago and that the same two people “may have engaged in similar behavior at a motel in Romeoville” in 2016 and 2017, Kroll said.

Chicago police identified those two people as Coleman, a minister at Greater Harvest Church in Chicago, and a 16-year-old female from northern Will County, Kroll said.

Romeoville police detectives conducted numerous follow-up investigations and learned Coleman had rented motel rooms in Romeoville on about three occasions in 2016 and 2017, Kroll said.

Romeoville and Chicago police “gained information via motel records, numerous interviews, and electronic data searches,” Kroll said.

“During this lengthy investigation, CPD (Chicago Police Department) became aware of another teenage girl purportedly involved in a very similar sexual relationship with Anthony Coleman,” Kroll said.

The investigation led to Judge Domenica Osterberger signing a warrant for Coleman’s arrest on March 11. The warrant carried a $250,000 bond.

Charges filed against Coleman alleged that he engaged in a sex act with a female minor on May 9, 2017, while he “held a position of trust, authority or supervision in relation” to the minor.

Osterberger’s warrant said Coleman’s last known address was in the first block of Apache Street, Park Forest. The county jail log listed his address in the 8800 block of South Paulina Street, Chicago.

Coleman’s next court date is scheduled for April 1.
