Joliet man charged in I-80 crash that injured state trooper

Man faces traffic charges in connection with crash

A Joliet man is facing three traffic citations for his role in a car crash on Interstate 80 that injured an Illinois State Police trooper, court records show.

Michael Ryan, 43, of the first block of Dwight Avenue was charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle causing bodily harm, improper passing of emergency vehicle causing injury to another, and driving to too fast for conditions or failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

About 8:15 a.m. Feb 16, a trooper with Illinois State Police District 5 responded to a crash on I-80 where it crosses over Interstate 55, according to the state police.

The trooper was inside a stationary squad car and positioned behind the crash scene in the right lane with his emergency lights activated, police said.

Ryan was driving a Chevrolet east on I-80 and struck the back of the trooper’s vehicle, police said.

Ryan “lost control of the vehicle, causing the Chevrolet to spin” and the rear end of the Chevrolet “crashed into the rear end of the squad car,” police said.

“The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local ... hospital for treatment. The trooper has since been released,” police said.

Ryan did not suffer any injuries in the crash. The citations said the visibility was clear and the road condition was icy.

The crash involving Ryan was the second “in less than (24) hours that has resulted in a trooper being injured and it is unacceptable,” said Lt. David Keltner, interim commander of Illinois State Police District 5.

The other crash was on Feb. 15 and seriously injured Illinois State Police Trooper Brian Frank.
