A 19-year-old Justice man was issued several traffic citations following a four-vehicle crash that involved a semitrailer on Interstate 55 in Romeoville.
Jose Acuna, the driver of a 2015 Ford Fusion, was cited for having no valid driver’s license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to the Illinois State Police.
About 3:55 p.m. Thursday, District 5 troopers responded to the car crash on I-55 near Weber Road in Romeoville, police said.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the front end of Acuna’s Ford Fusion struck the driver’s side tire of semitrailer driven by Angel Arroyo, 30, of Lyons, for “unknown reasons,” police said.
Because of the impact from the crash with Acuna’s vehicle, Arroyo’s semitrailer veered into the left lane and struck a pickup truck driven by Lester Cochran, 57, of Coal City, police said.
That collision caused Cochran’s vehicle to strike the median wall, police said.
Shekinah McDonald, 18, of Westchester witnessed Cochran strike the median wall and swerved in order to avoid striking his vehicle, police said.
As a result, McDonald lost control of the vehicle, overturning multiple times before coming to rest in the right ditch, police said.
Cochran and McDonald were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, police said.
About 3:58 p.m., the left and center lanes of I-55 in the area of the crash where closed down for an investigation and then all lanes were reopened about 6:13 p.m., police said.
